New England Revolution Preseason Update

New England Revolution Preseason Update

By Sean Donahue

The New England Revolution has started off their preseason trip to the Azores with three straight wins against Portuguese clubs from Portugal’s division three and below. The Revs started training in Foxboro mid-February to get in shape for their preseason trip to the Azores where they’ve had dominant 6-1, 1-0, and 3-1 wins over São Roque, União Micaelense and Aguia dos Arrifes, respectively. Shalrie Joseph, with the Grenada National Team, Pat Noonan and Steve Ralston, with the U.S. National Team and Brian Kamler, who has returned to Boston for treatment of Achilles' tendonitis have all missed all or part of the Revs preseason trip.

]The Revs started off their trip to the Azores with a 6-1 trashing of minor league club São Roque. Taylor Twellman, who was playing his first match since he a suffered a broken foot last September, started off the scoring just seconds into the match. São Roque tied the game briefly on a penalty kick in the first half, but another goal by Twellman just before halftime tied the game. The Revs quickly took over in the second half with Twellman scoring another goal to complete his hat trick. Jose Cancela, developmental trialist and Massachusetts’s native, Luke Vercollone, and Chris Brown, also playing his first match since he broke his left foot in September, rounded out the scoring.

The Revs had a more difficult challenge against União Micaelense of Portugal’s Third Division. União Micaelense, who has allowed only 14 goals in 26 matches and is currently third in the Third Division, held the Revs scoreless until a penalty kick 20 minutes into the second half. Jose Cancela was taken down in the box as he tried to dribble past three defenders and the referee awarded a penalty kick. Cancela took the PK and sent the goalie the wrong way scoring the only goal of the match. Goalkeeper Matt Reis filled in for Adin Brown  (quadriceps strain) and earned the Revs first shutout of the preseason.

Choosing to rest regular starters Carlos Llamosa and Taylor Twellman, the Revs still managed to pull off a convincing 3-1 defeat of Aguia dos Arrifes. Joe-Max Moore started the scoring in the first half with a shot off a Luke Vecollone pass. The score was doubled in the second half off a Joe-Max Moore header and substitute Marshall Leonard later added an insurance goal. Carlão scored a consolation goal late in the match for Aguia dos Arrifes.

The Revs next take on CD Santa Clara, the Azores’ top club, on Wednesday, March 17th. The game can be seen on RTP International only in Fall River on channel 40. Conflicting times have been listed and it is unclear if the game is on at noon or 6pm ET.

Joe Cumming has been hired by the New England Revolution to the position of Technical Director. Cummings served as Assistant General Manager for the Revolution from 1996-1999. He served as General Manager of the Boston Breakers in 2002 and 2003. Cummings is well liked by most New England fans and most believe this is a move in the right direction for the Revs. The hiring of Cummings and promotion of Craig Tornberg, both “soccer guys”, has pleased the fans that have been complaining about the lack of actual soccer fans in the Revs’ front office. Director of Soccer Renato Capobianco has left the Revs to pursue other business opportunities.
