San Jose crush Revs, 3-1
FOXBORO, MA. - The defending MLS Cup Champions, the San Jose Earthquakes (1-1-1), got their first win of the 2004 campaign at the New England Revolution’s (0-2-0) expense. Taylor Twellman struck first to give the Revs the lead early in the second half, but Dwayne De Rosario quickly equalized and Arturo Alvarez scored a goal off the bench to give San Jose the lead just six minutes after Twellman had scored. The crowd of 16,203, witnessed another poor defensive display by the Revs in their home opener.

San Jose had the majority of the possession in the opening minutes, but both teams saw good scoring opportunities. Brian Mullan nearly gave the ‘Quakes the lead less than 2 minutes in, when he sent a hard shot from just inside the box on target, forcing Revs’ goalie Adin Brown to make an acrobatic save.

Jose Cancela almost put the Revs in front in the 7th minute, when he curled a free kick around the San Jose wall and towards the upper left corner. Reigning Goalkeeper of the the Year, Pat Onstad, however, was up to the challenge and pushed it over the bar, giving the Revs their first corner kick of the match.

About one minute later, Landon Donovan played a give-and-go with De Rosario and found himself one-on-one with Adin Brown. Donovan’s shot beat Brown, but was saved by the left post.

The Revs took the lead 4 minutes into the second half, when Steve Ralston sent a pass to Joe-Max Moore, who had beaten the Earthquake’s offside trap. As Onstad came out to challenge, Moore sent a pass to Taylor Twellman, who easily sent it into the open net. The goal was questionable as Twellman appeared to be offside on the replays.

San Jose equalized just four minutes later, when Brown punched away a corner kick, but only as far as Dwayne De Rosario. Dwayne sent a spectacular bicycle kick into the back of the open net.

Just two minutes later, the Earthquakes took the lead, when Landon Donovan sent a cross through the box to substitute Arturo Alvarez. Alvarez sent it past Brown for his first goal of the season.

Twellman had a golden opportunity to equalize in the 67th minute, when Onstad saved his close range header, but gave up the rebound. Twellman got to the rebound and sent a hard shot on target from just a few feet away, but it was right at Onstad.

Substitute Brian Ching put the game out of reach in the 75th minute, when he received a through ball from Landon Donovan and sent a low, long range shot past Brown, for his first goal since he suffered an Achilles injury last year.

The Revs have shown many defensive holes without Carlos Llamosa (torn ACL) in their first two games of the season and will need to fix this problem immediately if they are to get a good result against the red-hot Metrostars. The game is next Sunday at 4:00PM on ESPN2.
