Rapids Vanquish the Quakes
DENVER, CO. - The Colorado Rapids continued their unbeaten 2004 campaign with a victory over the defending MLS Cup Champion San Jose Earthquakes Saturday night. Chris Henderson netted a first half goal to secure Colorado's 1-0 win. The victory was the Rapids first of the season.

The Colorado Rapids first two games of the season both ended in draws. The Dallas Burn held the Rapids to a 1-1 draw at the Cotton Bowl in their first game. The Los Angeles Galaxy found a similar result in Colorado's home opener. Despite being without a defeat, the Rapids were at the bottom of the West Conference with two points.

The San Jose Earthquakes came into the match with a win, a loss, and a draw on their season record. The Quakes held a mid-table spot with 4 points.

Rapids keeper Joe Cannon earned his first clean sheet of the season. He withstood a San Jose attack of 12 shots. Colorado's defense also deserves credit for the shutout. The defense held solid and kept San Jose strikers Dwayne De Rosario and Landon Donovan in check.

The San Jose Earthquakes seemed to lack flare during the game. Their style of play appeared passive and lacked tempo. The Quakes generated only a handful of really dangerous scoring chances.

The Rapids controlled the majority of the game. The offense moved with purpose and passing was smart. The good ball distribution helped the Rapids maintain possession and generate the most chances.

10 minutes into the match, Kyle Beckerman found the back of the net with his heel, but the goal was called back for offsides.

San Jose defender Eddie Robinson sustained an injury while defending an attack in the 22nd minute. He had to be helped back to the Quakes bench. Ramiro Corrales was substituted on to take Robinson's place in the defense.

The Rapids scored the only goal of the match in the 26th minute. Beckerman played a long ball to Henderson, who then made a run on the right side of the pitch. Henderson hit a low shot from about 17 yards out. The drive beat San Jose keeper Pat Onstad to his right and the ball hit the back of the net.

The Earthquakes worked to find the equalizer for the remainder of the half. They generated several chances including a shot that just barely missed high and wide.

Colorado nearly scored again in the second half with two very dangerous chances in the 45th minute. Pat Onstad stopped a point-blank range header by Jean-Phillipe Peguero, then John Spencer hit the frame of the goal with a header of his own.

San Jose brought more to the game in the second half. Offensively, they generated more chances and earned several corner kicks. Defensively they also showed improvement. They closed space and forced Colorado strikers from creating opportunities.

The Quakes moved to a more offensive formation of 4-3-3 in the late stages of the game, but the Rapids continued to generate chances of their own.

San Jose's best chance of the game was also their last. Troy Dayak put a header on goal, but Joe Cannon made the save.

The match ended with the Rapids defeating the Earthquakes 1-0. Colorado earns their first three points of the season. San Jose is dealt their second loss of the season.
