Revs defeat first place Los Angeles Galaxy
FOXBORO, MA. - The New England Revolution (1-2-1) earned their first win of the season by defeating the previously undefeated Los Angeles Galaxy (2-1-2) in front of a crowd of 13,811. Goals by midfielders Joe Franchino and Jose Cancela led the Revs to an impressive 2-1 victory. The Revs makeshift back-line once again held strong in a very physical match and held the Galaxy scoreless until the last seconds of stoppage time.

The Revs started out fast, controlling the possession in the early stages and shutting down any Galaxy chances. Just 5 minutes into the match their hard work paid off as Joey Franchino gave the Revs the lead. Taylor Twellman played a give-and-go with Pat Noonan and ended up with the ball in the right side of the box. Twellman then sent the ball back to Noonan, who passed it to an unmarked Franchino near the left side of the box. Franchino easily beat Los Angeles goalie Kevin Hartman with a left-footed shot from about 12 yards out.

The possession stayed in favor of the Revs until about the 10th minute when the Galaxy became more organized and took control of the match. The Revs defense, however, held strong and disrupted all of the Galaxy’s chances.

The Revs started to get some good possession again in the 20th minute and Twellman almost had a great chance for the Revs in the 22nd minute. Twellman received the ball and broke free of the Galaxy defense, but as he was approaching the box Galaxy defender Ryan Suarez threw Twellman down. Referee Kevin Terry, however, called the foul against Twellman and awarded the Galaxy a free kick. Just a minute later, Revolution playmaker Jose Cancela was taken down in the box and Terry made no call.

The Revs continued to pressure and Jay Heaps almost doubled the lead in the 24th minute. Cancela sent a free kick into the box from the right side of the field and Heaps received it unmarked. Heaps’ shot from close range was right at Hartman and easily saved.

Carlos Ruiz received a yellow card in the 27th minute for a mean-spirited challenge on Shalrie Joseph. Ruiz went up for a header and elbowed Joseph hard in the nose. Joseph, who was already recovering from a broken nose, left the game for several minutes with a nose bleed and held ice on his nose before returning. Joseph was told at half-time he needed to wear his nose mask and put it on for about five minutes until he realized he was having trouble seeing the ball in the air. Clint Dempsey retaliated about seven minutes later sending Ruiz to the ground. Ruiz stayed down for a while, but Dempsey did not receive a yellow card.

The Galaxy started to push forward again in the 30th minute sending dangerous crosses into the box and earning several corner kicks, but the Revs defense managed to clear the ball every time. Marshall Leonard did a great job in just his second game of the season, shutting down Carlos Ruiz on several occasions. Rookie Clint Dempsey also played very well as the Revs central defensive midfielder, disrupting the Galaxy’s attack, while also pushing forward on several occasions and creating chances for the Revs.

Galaxy defender Chris Albright received a yellow card in the 42nd minute for a reckless tackle from behind on Franchino.

Franchino had a chance to double the lead for the Revs in the 44th minute, when he received a cross from Jay Heaps, but his one-time shot was wide of the net.

Just before half-time Tyrone Marshall hit Twellman in the face sending him to the ground, but no call was made.

Jay Heaps received the first and only card the Revs got all night in the 52nd minute when he took down Galaxy playmaker Andreas Herzog. The Galaxy nearly scored the equalizer on the ensuing free kick when Ned Grabavoy sent the ball to Jovan Kirvoski. Kirvoski headed it towards goal beating goalie Adin Brown, but hitting the crossbar.

Ralston nearly doubled the score five minutes later when he played a give-and-go with Pat Noonan. Ralston found himself unmarked in the box, but his shot from close range was stopped by a spectacular save from Kevin Hartman.

The Galaxy received a scare about two minutes later when Tyrone Marshall and Ryan Suarez collided while trying to get the ball from Clint Dempsey. Both were on the ground for a while before Suarez got up and Marshall left the field for a few seconds.

Adin Brown denied Carlos Ruiz a goal in the 63rd minute, when Ruiz received the ball from Grabavoy and sent a hard shot on target from about 7 yards out. Brown got down very quickly to make a spectacular save.

Taylor Twellman was hit in the face again in the 65th minute, this time by Grabavoy. No card was given by Terry. Twellman took abuse all night from the Galaxy defense, but continued playing well without retaliating. Eight minutes later, he was taken down from behind from Ryan Suarez as Twellman got up from this challenge he was holding his head.

The Revs finally doubled their lead in the 70th minute, when Steve Ralston was taken down in the box by Paul Broome while trying to get to a through ball. Cancela took the ensuing penalty kick and sent the ball to the lower right corner, while Hartman dove left.

Rookie Andy Dorman came into the match in the 79th minute for Jose Cancela. This was just Dorman’s second appearance for the Revs this season. Both coming as late game substitutions.

The Galaxy received two more yellow cards before the match ended. Marcelo Saragosa received one in the 86th minute for taking down Dorman and Ryan Suarez received one in the 92nd minute for shoving Twellman into the boards on the side of the field.

The Galaxy finally got a goal in the last seconds of the game when Ruiz sent a hard shot towards Brown. Brown got a hand to it, but it continued to roll towards the line. Before Jay Heaps could get in to clear it, Alejandro Moreno slid in to push it just over the line.

The match ended at 2-1 and Adin Brown was named Man of the Match for his great play in goal. The Revs next head to Colorado to face the Rapids at 9:30PM Eastern this Friday. The match can be seen on Fox Sports Net New England.
