US defeats EL Salvador in violent World Cup Qualifier
FOXBORO, MA. – The U.S. made an early lead stand and added a second half insurance goal in a game that saw El Salvador’s coach as well as a player ejected and two fights. Brian Ching earned his first start for the U.S. National Team and didn’t fail to disappoint as he scored in the 5th minute. The National Team now moves into first place in Group A of CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying.

Bobby Convey, playing left back, made a nice run up the left flank in the 5th minute, before sending a cross into the box. Ching got on the end of the cross and headed it home from about 6 yards out.

19 year old El Salvador midfielder Denis Alas received a yellow card for a late tackle on Bobby Convey in the 11th minute. Convey himself would receive a card 6 minutes later for a foul on Josue Galdamez. Bruce Arena received a warning for arguing that call.

US forward Conor Casey was denied a potential break-away in the 20th minute when EL Salvador Captain Victor Velasquez fell as he was chasing Casey. Trinadad referee Neal Brizan, who was nowhere near the play called a foul against Casey.

Alas saw his game end early in the 26th minute. The teenager was seen wearing jewelry by the U.S. bench and they took the stoppage of play from the 24th minute, when DaMarcus Beasley was hit in the stomach by the foot of Jorge Rodriguez, to alert the referee. After a quick conference between the referees, Alas was issued his second yellow card resulting in a red card ejection. Before the match both teams had been informed of the jewelry policy. El Salvador Head Coach Juan Paredes was ejected three minutes later for arguing the call. Arena himself wasn’t happy with the call. All the players were gathered in the area and a fight started, but was stopped quickly before it amounted to anything. "My suggestion is that a better way to manage the game is just tell the player to take the jewelry off," U.S. coach Bruce Arena said. "That's hard to do when you have a young referee. Maybe a little more experience, maybe he'll disregard what the rule book says there and use maybe a little more common sense."

DaMarcus Beasley created a chance in the 34th minute when he ran into the box before sending a cross to Conor Casey. Casey’s shot from 6-yards out was tipped wide by goalie Santos Rivera.

More poor refereeing was on display in the 42nd minute when Landon Donovan was tackled from behind, yet managed to keep his feet. Somehow the foul was called against him.

El Salvador goalie Santos Rivera twice collided with Conor Casey, going down both times. This, in addition to the other injuries and the ejections, led to and unheard of 8 minutes of stoppage time.

Two blatant fouls in quick succession against the U.S. lead to a scuffle in the goal area. First Alfredo Pacheco grabbed the shirt of U.S. Captain Claudio Reyna and violently threw him to the ground in the 57th minute. Pacheco received a yellow card on the play. Then moments later, Beasley dove for a cross and just missed it as it sailed out of bounds. Goalie Santos Rivera took the opportunity step on Beasley’s face with his cleat. The referee did not witness the incident and neither a foul nor a card were given. Captain Claudio Reyna stepped up to defend Beasley and much pushing between the El Salvador and U.S. National Teams ensued.

The El Salvador team faked injuries all night to waste time and in the 63rd minute Rivera went down after chasing a Steve Cherundolo shot that sailed high of the box. After taking the time for the trainer to come onto the field Rivera got back up showing no signs of any injury.

Donovan finished off the match in the 69th minute. After receiving a pass from Cherundolo, Donovan dribbled through the El Salvador defense to the top of the box before sending a left footed shot past Rivera and into the back of the net.

The win was the 50th of Bruce Arena’s career as Head Coach of the U.S. National Team.
