United Gets Fiesty Win Over MetroStars
The Chicago Fire were supposed to miss last year's playoffs. They made the MLS Cup Final. The Columbus Crew were lost at the beginning of the year. They have not lost in 15 straight matches. DC United were missing their captain, top two scorers and had only won a single game on the road this season going into Saturday night. They won. Can anyone figure out Major League Soccer?

On the strength of Freddy Adu's 5th goal of the year, United battened down the hatches and held on to a 1-0 victory. Missing Captain Ryan Nelsen, top scorer Jaime Moreno, and top goal scorer Alecko Eskandarian, DC United gutted out a victory over their rival The New York/New Jersey MetroStars. The win inches United closer to the playoffs and all but secures the Atlantic Cup. I would say that DC is a lock for the playoffs, but who knows in MLS?

Ezra Hendrickson filled the captain's shoes admirably clearing the line of a sure goal and anchoring the back line. United's defense was outstanding all game long especially in the final 20 minutes. United always had a number of defenders around the ball as DC attempted to suffocate the MetroStars attack. It was nice to see Santino Quaranta make his first appearance of the season. He had one shot on goal and should have had another if not for Johnny Walker's aggresive play.

It was also nice to see Freddy Adu performing with an intensity that we haven't seen before. Beyond scoring his goal, Adu got into a bit of a tussel Chris Leitch and Mike Magee. He was awarded a yellow card, but also sent a message that he wasn't going to be pushed around. It looks as though Adu is regaining his legs because of the time of he has received lately. He has been strong on the ball and he supplied all the offense necessary for United on Saturday night.

Speaking of strong performances, Ben Olsen not only carried the team, but the captain's armband when Earnie Stewart was lost due to injury. His steady influence was perhaps the most integral part of United's improbable victory. Dema Kovalenko provided his 10th assist of the year, good enough for second in the league. Credit should also be given to Bryan Namoff, Mike Petke, and Nick Rimando for keeping the clean sheet.

So where does DC United go from here? Job number one is simply getting a point in next week's match against the New England Revolution. That would secure a playoff birth and could keep hope of a second place seed alive. Otherwise, people in DC could end up sweating it for the next two weeks. If you can't get a point in two home games with everything on the line, you don't deserve to go to the playoffs. Second would be getting Jaime Moreno healthy. That hamstring must be in top form for the playoffs. He needs to be the first person off the field when a playoff birth is secured. DC fans after Saturday's win are expecting another month of soccer from their beloved club. But in the wacky world of MLS, who knows?
