Americans Abroad - Sunday Edition (1/23/05)
Germany - Bundesliga

Hannover 96 vs Bayer Leverkusen

Steve Cherundolo - What a way to kick off the second half with a potential matchup against US teammate Landon Donovan. Steve will be in the starting lineup for Hannover at his normal right back position. Hannover are currently in 7th place in the Bundesliga trailing 1st place Bayern Munich by 9 points. They came into the break with 8 points from their last 5 games (2W-2D-1L). This game is the return match as Hannover lost the season opener to Leverkusen (2-1) at the BayArena. 96 is still within range of at least qualifying for the UEFA Cup for next season. They will have to maintain their good form and a win against Leverkusen would be a good start.

Landon Donovan - Landon is not in the starting lineup for this game. Robson Ponte was able to hold on to his spot at least for this game. Donovan will start the game on the bench. I would imagine that he gets into the game if Leverkusen needs a spark. Ponte play in matches has not been stellar so would expect he needs to impress manager Klaus Augenthaler to keep Landon off his heels.

Germany - Bundesliga.2

Energie Cottbus vs FC Koln

Gregg Berhalter - Gregg is not in the starting lineup today for Cottbus. He is serving the 2nd game of a suspension for the red card he received on 12/5/04 against Eintracht Frankfurt.

RW Erfut vs Saarbrucken

John Van Buskirk - John is not in the starting lineup for Erfut. John usually works off the bench anyway so this is not really a surprise.

Monday Preview

England - Premier League

Blackburn vs Bolton

Brad Friedel - Brad will take his customary place in net for Blackburn. Blackburn are in 16th place in the Premier League with 25 points. That puts them 7 points clear of the first relegation position (Southampton). Rovers currently have a 2 game winning streak in league play coming into this match via two 1-0 (Portsmouth, Charlton).

Yesterday's Recap

England - Premier League

Birmingham vs Fulham (1-2) - Bocanegra started and went the distance. He picked up a yellow card in the 90 minute in this very scrappy match. The match offical let just about everything go until late in the second half where Fulham converted a penalty taken by Andy Cole to tie the game. Papa Bouba Dipo continued his stellar form by scoring the game winner in the 83rd minute. Brian McBride came on in the 89th minute as a sub for Andy Cole.

England - Championship

Plymouth vs Preston (0-2)

Eddie Lewis - Eddie started and went the full 90 minutes as Preston won 2-0. Chris Sedgwick and Patrick Agyemang scored for the boys from Deepdale.

Reading vs Ipswich (1-1)

Marcus Hahnemann - In a game which had the appearance of being a 0-0 draw, both goals were scored in injury time. Ivar Ingimarsson scored just before the end to pull out a draw for Reading. Marcus played well keeping things scoreless for most of the day.

Danny Karbassiyoon - Danny started his 4th startight match for Ipswich. He went the distance at left back for the Tractor Boys.

Wigan vs Watford (2-2)

Jay Demerit - Jay went distance in this game against 1st place Wigan. Demerit has started all 6 matches in defence for Watford this year. Watford was playing their 3rd match in 7 days so a draw against the league leaders was a fine result.

Bobby Convey (Reading)

Player who was not in the matchday squad:
Jay Denny (Stoke)

Germany - Bundesliga

Mainz vs VfB Stuttgart (2-3)

Conor Casey - Conor started for Mainz and was subbed out in the 73rd minute for Niclas Weiland. Mainz scored first in this game as Fabien Gerber put them up 1-0 in the 13th minute. Including an own goal which tied the game charged to Mainz keeper Dimo Wache, Stuttgart scored 3 unanswerd until Christoph Teinert pulled one back for Mainz in the 90th minute.

Holland - Eredivisie

PSV vs NAC Breda (4-0)

DaMarcus Beasley - DaMarcus played the full 90 minutes for only the 5th time this season. Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink scored twice to lead PSV to a 4-0 victory. Beasley assisted on the first goal as provided the cross that was slotted home in the 28th minute.

Belgium - Jupiler League

Charleroi vs Standard Liege (0-0)

Oguchi Owneyu - Gooch went the distance for Liege in the 0-0 draw as they played Charleroi for the second time in 3 days (Belgian Cup). This was the 6th clean sheet for Owenyu.

Next week we'll be looking into the lower divisions in England & Germany as there are many more Yanks to talk about.
