Galvan Rey's Double Stings Kansas Late
After a nightmare first half at Giants Stadium for the MetroStars, Sergio Galvan Rey was able to come up big and save the Metros after going down by 2-0 within the first half of play. John Wolyniec provided two assists, both of which found Galvan Rey in the box as he netted two goals Saturday night to give the MetroStars a tie on their “real” opening night.

During the first 20 minutes of play the MetroStars were able to hold control of the ball, and play for most of the time. A slight breakdown in the MetroStars defense lead to a shot from the top of the box. The shot deflected and took a strange bounce deep into the box. Jack Jewsbury found himself alone and slide to knock the ball past goalkeeper Zach Wells to put Kansas City ahead early.

After controlling most of the game, Kansas’ first goal put the Metros in a hole. Nonetheless the MetroStars continued to pressure the game and looked for the equalizer. Few chances came during the next 10 minutes of play. Then, the tides turned for the worst. Kansas City made several smooth passes down the right side of the field. The ball eventually found it’s way to Chris Klein who marched into the box. As Klein neared net, Wells with little experience, went down too early and Klein easily put the ball into the top of the net for a Wizards 2-0 lead.

As the first half was coming to a close it was John Wolyniec who sent a perfect pass into the box. The ball went right to Galvan Rey’s feet. Galvan Rey, with composure, snuck the ball away from his defender and buried it into the bottom of the net. The MetroStars went into the locker room down by a goal but having the confidence after scoring one goal just before half time.

As the second half began Kansas City came out with energy. The first 10 minutes of the second half were controlled by Kansas as they pressured for a third goal. In the 60th minute Frenchman, Youri Djorkaeff sent a long ball to John Wolyniec who worked hard to control it. Wolyniec turned on the end line and passed the ball into empty space. Galvan Rey ran into the box, collected the ball, and cracked a shot past KC keeper Bo Oshoniyi. The MetroStars had done the impossible, and made their way back against a superb Kansas defense to tie the game at two.

The MetroStars and the Wizards were both unable to score any more goals Saturday night. The game would end up with the same 2-2 score, as Sergio Galvan Rey netted his two goals that night to tie last season’s record. After coming back by 2 goals the MetroStars felt good about themselves, but were unable to get an early-season home win.

The MetroStars are at home for the third straight week next week as they take on the Chicago Fire for the first time this year on a Friday night. The game will be aired live on ESPN2 Friday the 22nd of April at 8pm.
