US wins Gold Cup, defeats Panama on penalties
E. Rutherford, NJ. - The US Men’s National Soccer Team defeated Panama 3-1 on penalty kicks after both sides failed to score in 90 minutes of regulation time. Although the US controlled much of the possession in the match, both sides had great chances to take the lead, but poor shooting and good goalkeeping kept both teams off the score sheet. The win marked the third time the US has won the Gold Cup.

Both sides saw chances in the first half, with Panama having two break-aways called offsides. The US got into dangerous positions, but some poor shooting kept them off the score board. Panama goalkeeper Jaime Penedo, named to the all tournament team earlier in the day as well as US goalkeeper Kasey Keller, named as an honorable mention for the all tournament team were both kept active in keeping the game scoreless.

The US came out for the second half looking for the winner, but failed to put anything past Penedo. Panama exposed the US a few times on the counter attack, but Keller denied them each time.

Neither side were too dangerous in extra time and it ended scoreless sending the match into penalties.

Landon Donovan and DaMarcus Beasley, the two most dangerous players for the US in the match were also named to the all tournament team with US defender Oguchi Onyewu, while midfielder John O’Brien was an honorable mention to round out the selections from the US team.

Keller set the tone in the penalty kick shoot-out saving Luis Tejada’s first penalty kick for Panama with a great diving save. Santino Quaranta then took and scored the next penalty for the US, sending a hard shot just out of the reach of Penedo. Jorge Dely Valdes stepped up to take the next penalty for Panama and sent Keller the wrong way, but hit the crossbar. Chris Armas took the next one for the US and sent it right down the middle. Penedo wasn’t fooled and easily saved the penalty. Panama’s next penalty by Falope Baloy sent Keller the wrong way, for Panama’s lone goal in the shoot-out. Landon Donovan scored the next penalty with a driven shot just out of the reach of Penedo. Panama’s final penalty of the night, by Alberto Blanco, again beat Keller, but this time was just high of the net. Brad Davis took the US next penalty beating Penedo for the game clinching penalty.
