Wizards Earn Shut-Out Against 10-man Crew
Davy Arnaud’s goal near the end of the first half followed by the ejection of Frankie Hejduk proved to be all that was needed to defeat the Columbus Crew Saturday night at Arrowhead Stadium.

The first half was even for both teams, neither one able to get behind the others defense often. The final minutes of the first half would determine the game, and the Wizards defense anchored by Goalkeeper Tony Meola were able to earn a second shut out in as many games. Meola also earned a record 50th career shut out.

Wizards midfielder Kerry Zavagnin looped a ball over the top which Davy Arnaud in the 42nd minute, who this season enjoys a starting spot on the squad, was able to receive and beat the offside trap. The Crew ‘keeper charged him, but Arnaud was able to coolly chip the ball over the 5’10” Jon Busch and into the goal.

Minutes later, a tussle between the Wizard’s Alex Zotinca and the Crew’s Frankie Hejduk would result in a yellow card for Zotinca and a red for Hejduk. As the Wizard’s set up their wall on a free kick, Zotinca pushed the back of Hejduk with his forearm, to which Hejduk responded by elbowing the Romanian native in the chin.

The second half would see the Crew’s best chances. Six minutes after the break on a free kick, Chad Marshal sent a header into the box which bounced off the post. Brian Maisonneuve’s second-chance effort went just wide.

The Wizard’s held on and created an opportunity when Josh Wolf’s point blank shot was saved by Jon Busch, but most of the second half was uneventful and the Crew did not keep Meola very busy.

With the win, the Wizards improve to 1-0-1 while the Crew fall to 0-2-0. Both teams return to action next week.
