ďNewĒ Burn Hold Off Wizards, 1-0
After finishing in the very bottom of the league last year, the Dallas Burn appear to have made a drastic turn around, and tonight proved that with a 1-0 win over Kansas City in front of 10,269 on their home opening night.

Toni Nhlekoís speed troubled the Wizardís for the majority of the night and it paid off quickly. In just the 17th minute, seconds after a Chris Klein shot for the Wizardís, Nhleko made a lightning-quick counter attack. Wizardís defender Jimmy Conrad was the first to try and slow him, but fell down, leaving the South African with two defenders and Tony Meola. Meola leaned to the right, being shielded by two of his own defenders, and Nhleko took a soft shot that went left and into the goal.

Minutes later, the Burnís Ronnie OíBrien, coming off of last season broken leg, crossed the ball across the goal to Eddie Johnson who was all alone at the back post, but his first time shot went wide.

The Wizardís Chris Klein, who failed to make Bruce Arenaís roster for the USMNT- Mexico match coming up, had several opportunities but could not capitalize on any.

Just after the break, Josh Wolff was able to slip a short pass through to Diego Walsh. Dallas Ďkeeper Scott Garlick was quick off his line, though, and Walsh made a hurried shot that went wide left.

The Burn had several opportunities to make it 2-0. Johnson was able to find himself behind the Wizardís defense and alone with Ďkeeper Meola, but Meola would not allow him to get off a shot quickly and when he did, former Dallas defender Shavar Thomas was able to block it.

In the 67th minute, Nhleko has a second goal, but it was called back as the Dallas striker commited a foul.

U.S. international Cory Gibbs left the game for the Burn, giving the Wizardís more hope. In the 89th minute, K.C. rookie Matt Taylor appeared to have headed a ball past Garlick, but the goal was called back as Taylor was ruled offsides.

The Wizardís fought through the four minutes of stoppage time, but were unable to equalize.

With the win, Dallas remains unbeaten and the Wizardís fall to 1-1-1.
