U.S. cruise past Honduras in 4-0 victory
FOXBORO, MA. (6/2/04) - The U.S. National Team easily defeated Honduras by a margin of 4-0 thanks in part to two goals from Brian McBride in front of a Gillette Stadium crowd of 11,533 that was mostly pro-Honduras. The U.S. dominated in the first half, but backed off a little after going into half time with a two goal lead and a man advantage thanks to the 40th minute ejection of Honduras’ captain Amado Guevara. The match was the final tune-up for the U.S. before they begin the long qualifying process for the World Cup on June 13th.

The U.S. pushed forward quickly in the match and kept the majority of the possession in Honduras’ side of the field for the first half. Captain Claudio Reyna led the team from the midfield as he made his 100th career cap (international appearance) and became just the seventh U.S. player to earn 100 career caps joining an elite group that includes Joe-Max Moore of the New England Revolution.

The U.S. received a scare in just the second minute, when DaMarcus Beasley was taken down next to the U.S. bench. Beasley was challenged by two Honduras defenders and it looked like he may have been unintentionally kicked by one. Beasley stayed down for nearly a minute before rejoining the match.

Honduras was forced to make an early substitution in just the 15th minute after goalkeeper Victor Coello left the field with an injury. In the play leading up to the injury, Carlos Bocanegra headed a Claudio Reyna free kick towards Brian McBride. McBride chipped the ball over his back as Coello came out to challenge. “I really didn’t catch him,” McBride said about the play that led to Coello’s injury. “I think I might have grazed his stomach. The guys said that he slipped afterwards and when he slipped he fell out and his shoulder popped.” Coello was subbed out for Hector Medina.

The U.S. took the lead in the 22nd minute, when Chevrolet Man of the Match Brian McBride scored his 24th goal of his international career. Steve Cherundolo won the ball near midfield and played a give-and-go with Chris Armas. Cherundolo continued to run down the right flank before sending a cross to McBride just outside the 6-yard box. The cross made it over three defenders before McBride headed past Medina. The goal tied him with Joe-Max Moore for second on the all-time U.S. Goal Scoring List.

Honduran Captain and Major League Soccer star Amado Guevara provided most of the offense for Honduras in the first half. Four minutes after McBride scored, Guevara, who plays for the Metrostars in MLS, sent a dangerous free kick just wide of the net.

McBride moved ahead of Moore on the all-time U.S. Goal Scoring List in the 37th minute, with his second goal of the match. Conor Casey received a pass from Claudio Reyna and sent a through ball to Brian McBride, who was charging into the box. McBride struck the ball with his left foot from about 17 yards out and sent it into the upper-left corner of the net.

Just three minutes later, Honduras was reduced to ten men when Guevara received a red card for hitting DaMarcus Beasley in the face with a closed fist. Beasley plays the Chicago Fire in MLS, which is one of Guevara’s club team’s (Metrostars) rivals and this may have been motivation for the ridiculous foul. Beasley received medical treatment and left the field for about a minute before returning.

The U.S. made several substitutions at the start of the second half. “We weren’t playing any MLS players more than 45 minutes that have games on Saturday,” Head Coach Bruce Arena said after the match. The U.S. brought on Bobby Convey for Greg Vanney, Pablo Mastroeni for Chris Armas, and Eddie Lewis for DaMarcus Beasley. Honduras also made some changes bringing on Emil Martinez for Jerry Palacios and Victor Bernardez for Milton Palacios. The U.S. seemed to be content with the two goal lead and didn’t play very well for about the first twenty minutes of the half, allowing Honduras to push forward.

The U.S. finally regained control of the match in the 77th minute, when a Honduran player brought down a Claudio Reyna corner kick. The ball continued through the box, until Eddie Lewis got on the end of it and scored from three yards out.

Just four minutes later, the U.S. scored the fourth and final goal of the match. Reyna took a U.S. free kick from just outside the box to the right and crossed it to Tony Sanneh. Sanneh headed it past Medina for his third career international goal.

The U.S. had one last chance in the 89th minute, when Landon Donovan received the ball just outside the 6-yard box. Donovan’s volley went well over the net and didn’t even trouble Medina.

The U.S. next face Grenada on June 13th in their first qualifying match for the 2006 World Cup. The game will take place in Columbus at Crew Stadium and can be seen live on ESPN2 at 1PM ET. No New England Revolution players have been named to the U.S. squad for the match, but Shalrie Joseph is expected to play for Grenada.
