Noonan hat trick leads Revs in late comeback victory against Kansas City
KANSAS CITY, MO. (6/2/04) - Two goals in the last minutes of the match by Pat Noonan, completed his hat trick and gave the New England Revolution (2-4-3) a surprising 3-2 victory over the Kansas City Wizards (3-4-2). The Revs finally produced some offense scoring three goals for the first time all season. Missing forward Joe-Max Moore and star forward Taylor Twellman to injury, the Revs moved Clint Dempsey out of his normal defensive-midfield spot into forward alongside Noonan.

The Revs were forced to make some changes in midfield after moving Dempsey to forward and Joe Franchino was moved to defensive midfield, while Ralston was moved to left-midfield. Rookie Felix Brillant got his first start of the year at right-midfield. Shalrie Joseph and Jose Cancela took their usual defensive midfield and central attacking midfield positions, respectively. Avery John started in central defense for the injured Brian Kamler. Marshall Leonard played left defense and Jay Heaps played right defense in the Revolution’s 3-5-2 formation. Also missing from the match because of injury were normal starting central defenders Carlos Llamosa and Rusty Pierce.

The Revs controlled the majority of the possession in the first half and took the lead in the 16th minute. Steve Ralston ran down the left flank towards the box and sent a left-footed cross into the box. The cross was cleared back out of the box, but came back to Ralston, who this time sent a right-footed cross to Pat Noonan. As Wizards ‘keeper Tony Meola came out to challenge, Noonan easily headed the ball over him and into the back of the net from about ten yards out giving the Revs a 1-0 lead.

The Wizards tied the match in the 33rd minute, when Chris Klein brought down a Jose Burciaga pass and set it towards Josh Wolff. Wolff barely hit the ball on his attempted shot, but got enough power on it for it to roll through the box and past Revs' goalie Matt Reis.

Davy Arnaud gave the Wizards the lead four minutes later, when Jay Heaps attempted to send a back pass to Reis. Arnaud beat Reis to the pass and easily chipped it over him, sending it into the net and giving the Wizards a two goal lead.

Neither team created many chances in the second half as the Wizards started to play more defensively. Matt Reis and Tony Meola easily stopped the few chances they faced in the first part of the second half.

Kansas City played the final ten minutes trying to kill off the match by keeping possession and playing very defensively. This strategy worked very well and it seemed the Revs had no chance until a series of shots in the 86th minute lead to a goal. Clint Dempsey, Shalrie Joseph and Steve Ralston all saw their shots deflected or saved by Meola, before a rebound got to Noonan who sent a hard shot from about 16 yards out into the back of the net.

Noonan gave the Revs the lead and completed his hat trick four minutes later. Joseph received the ball from Jose Cancela before sending a cross to Noonan, who sent a spectacular shot from just inside the box into the upper-left corner of the net.

The match ended at 3-2 and Pat Noonan was named Man of the Match for his performance. The Revs next face the Columbus Crew on Sunday at 4PM at Gillette Stadium. The match can be seen on Fox Sports Net New England.
