Revs dominate but still lose
DALLAS, TX. (6/12/04)- Despite missing seven starters, the New England Revolution (2-6-3) dominated against the Dallas Burn (4-4-2), but still left with a 3-1 loss. Without regular starters Taylor Twellman, Pat Noonan, Joe-Max Moore, Carlos Llamosa, Rusty Pierce and Brian Kamler due to injury and Shalrie Joseph due to his call-up to the Grenada national team, the Revs still managed to control the possession for the majority of the match. Already down 3-1 in the 89th minute, the Revs faced more problems when captain Joey Franchino was suspended, leaving the Revs without yet another player for the upcoming match against Kansas City.

The Burn took the lead in the 13th minute, when Simo Valakari got control of a Clint Dempsey clearance. Valakari sent a pass to Jason Kreis, who easily beat Revs goalie Matt Reis from close range. On replays, Kreis appeared to be offsides, but no call was made. The goal was the 87th of Kreis’ career bringing him within one goal of all-time MLS goal-scoring record currently held by former MLS great Roy Lassiter. It was his first goal of the season.

Despite having the majority of the chances in the first half, the Revs were unable to equalize before half time. The Revs came out of half-time quickly however, and got on the scoreboard just 7 minutes into the half as Steve Ralston received a long pass from Jose Cancela. Ralston crossed the ball towards Dempsey, who was making a run towards the near post. The Texas native headed the shot past Dallas ‘keeper Jeff Cassar, pleasing Dempsey’s many friends and family members, who were at the match.

Revived by the goal, the Revs threatened to take the lead, but Dallas took the lead on their first chance of the half. Eddie Johnson got over Dempsey and Richie Baker and headed a Brad Davis corner kick past Reis and into the net. Reis, who didn’t record a single save on the night, ran out as if to punch the ball and when he realized he couldn’t get to it, he headed back towards goal and was caught out of position on the goal.

The Revs pushed forward trying to equalize and saw many good opportunities, but Dallas put the game out of reach on a counterattack. Late substitute Toni Nhleko received a through ball from Eric Quill and calmly sent it past Reis for his fourth goal of the year.

The situation got worse for the Revs in the 89th minute, when Philip Sayler slid in from behind and took out Joey Franchino. Franchino lost his composure and retaliated for the reckless and dangerous tackle by head-butting Sayler. Franchino was immediately ejected, but worse than that, he’ll be suspended for the Revs next match because of the red card. Sayler received no card for the tackle, but Simo Valakari received a second yellow card and was ejected for the ensuing fracas.

The last place Revolution, find themselves in an even deeper whole after the loss, but may see better fortunes ahead with Taylor Twellman, Pat Noonan and Brian Kamler all possibly returning from injury when the Revs face Kansas City on Saturday the 19th at Gillette Stadium. The match can be seen live on the WB56 at 7:30PM.
