Revolution lose to Kansas City, 3-1
FOXBORO, MA. - The New England Revolution (2-7-3) lost 3-1 to the Kansas City Wizards (6-4-3), to fall even further into last place. Both the Metrostars and D.C. United won and increased their leads ahead of the Revs in the standings. The Revs are now two wins behind Columbus in the East for the last play-off spot.

Both teams looked evenly matched in the first half as each saw seven shots. The Revs first good chance came in the 21st minute, when Pat Noonan played a through ball to Clint Dempsey at the top of the box. Dempsey made a good run and would have been clear through on goal had he not been taken down by a Wizardsí defender. Referee Michael Kennedy failed to notice the foul and allowed play to continue.

Brian Kamler, who was playing his first game back since suffering from a hamstring injury saw his match end early in the 30th minute, when he was forced to be subbed out for Richie Baker after re-injuring his hamstring. Pat Noonan was also back from back spasms he suffered two weeks ago and Taylor Twellman could be back as soon as next week.

Adin Brown, finally getting the starting spot in goal back from Matt Reis, was called upon to make a diving one-handed punch save in the 34th minute on a Davy Arnaud shot from the left side of the box.

Baker provided immediate offense as in the 35th minute, when he sent a cross to Cancela just outside the 6-yard box, who tried to chip it over a charging Tony Meola, but didnít get it high enough and Meola easily saved it.

Kansas City took the lead in the 41st minute, when Adin Brown punched away a Francisco Gomez shot, but gave up a bad rebound. As the Revs defense stood around watching, Davy Arnaud pounced on the rebound and easily scored. Jay Heaps, who wasnít even the closest Revsí defender to the ball, was the only Revsí player who attempted to get to the rebound.

The Revs had a goal taken away from them in the 48th minute, when Brillant dribbled through the left side of the box before sending a shot to the far corner of the net. Meola got a hand on it, but it seemed still destined for the net. Pat Noonan slid in from an offside position to be sure the ball went in and the referee called the goal offside. The ball appeared to have already crossed the goal line on replays before Noonan touched it and therefore shouldnít have been offsides.

Three minutes later, the Revs were denied by the post, when a Pat Noonan shot from about 20 yards out, beat Meola, but hit the post and came back into play. He was denied again 6 minutes later on a breakaway when Meola was quick off his line to get the ball.

Second half sub, Matt Taylor, doubled the Wizards lead in the 70th minute, when he received a cross from Davy Arnaud. Taylor easily sent a shot past Brown from about 6 yards out.

Four minutes later, Clint Dempsey cut the Wizards lead in half when he headed home a Richie Baker cross for his 3rd goal of the year. The assist gave Baker his first point in his MLS career.

The Revs came close to equalizing and dominated the rest of the match. Dempsey almost scored again in the 78th minute on a bicycle kick from about 6 yards out, but Meola easily saved it. Two minutes later, Cancela had a breakaway down the right flank, but decided to pass it instead of shooting and his pass was intercepted. Three minutes after that, Cancela saw his left-footed shot from the right side of the box saved by Meola. Richie Baker had a similar breakaway to Cancela in the 85th minute, but he too decided to pass it and saw his pass intercepted.

Matt Taylor put the game out of reach on the last play of the game when he ran through the Revsí back line before scoring his second goal of the match. The Revs had all pushed forward looking for an equalizer leaving their back line open to a counterattack.

The Revs next face the Metrostars at home on June 26th, needing a positive result to get back on track. The match can be seen live on WB56 at 7:30pm.
