Ralston free kick ties Fire 1-1
Chicago, IL. – An amazing free kick by Steve Ralston just seconds after the Fire took the lead stunned the Fire and the record crowd of 39,529, while giving the New England Revolution (3-8-4) a crucial point on the road. While the Chicago Fire (4-5-6) controlled most of the possession, the Revs created the majority of good goal-scoring chances, but again failed to bury their chances and fell down 1-0 in the 50th minute on a Damani Ralph penalty kick goal before equalizing seconds later.

Taylor Twellman, who was making his first appearance since injuring his hamstring in May, had a chance to put the Revs on top in the 24th minute, when a through ball left him one on one with goal keeper Henry Ring. The ball took an unexpected bounce however, and forced Twellman to take a quick shot that was right at the charging Ring.

The Chicago Fire took the lead five minutes into the second half when Matt Reis made a spectacular save on a Damani Ralph shot. The rebound fell to Dipsy Selolwane, whose shot hit the post and ended up at Andy Williams. Williams dribbled through the right side of the box before being taken down by a late slide tackle from Marshall Leonard. Referee Jair Marrufo awarded a penalty kick that Ralph took, blasting a shot to Revs goalie Matt Reis’ left. Reis got a hand on the shot, but it was too powerful for him to stop.

The Revs equalized just seconds later, when they were awarded a free kick about 30 yards from goal. Jose Cancela, who usually takes the Revs free kicks, was out with a hip strain, joining eight other injured Revs players, so Steve Ralston stepped up to take it. Ralston curled a shot around the Chicago wall and into the upper left corner of the net, while goalie Henry Ring just stood watching. The shot bounced off the post before going in giving Ralston his first goal of the year.

Pat Noonan and Taylor Twellman both had chances to give the Revs the lead in the last forty minutes of the match. Noonan wasted a great chance sending a shot well over the net and Twellman saw his chance saved by a diving Henry Ring. The Revs had one last chance in the last seconds of stoppage time, but Noonan’s header off an Andy Dorman free kick was stopped by a spectacular save from Ring.

The match ended at 1-1 leaving the Revs still two wins back from Chicago for the fourth and final playoff spot in the East. The Revs will look for a win on Wednesday, July 14th, when they come back to Foxboro to face the Fire again. The match starts at 7:30PM and can be seen on tape delay at 11PM on Fox Sports Net New England.
