Rapid Rubbish: A Week in Review
|
Denver, CO. - It has not been a very good week for the Colorado Rapids. The team is now in a full fledged slump. Colorado has not won a game in their last 4 matches. Their last victory was against the New England Revolution back on the 4th of July.
Before this week, Colorado had an unpleasant two game series against the Los Angeles Galaxy. The first resulted in a 2-0 defeat at the Home Depot Center. The second resulted in a disappointing 0-0 draw at Invesco field at Mile High. The Rapids seemed to dominate both games, sadly the result were not to the best of their luck.
This past week, however, has brought far a worse showing for the club. Colorado suffered two embarrassing losses to the San Jose Earthquakes and the Dallas Burn. As opposed to looking like they had a winning chance in these games, they practically didn't show up.
The first disaster was a 3-1 defeat to the Quakes. The Rapids 1# ranked defense in the MLS was nonexistent. San Jose almost effortlessly moved around Colorado's sluggish play and poor marking. Very few positive things came from this game.
The second game in this past week was a far more agonizing defeat. The Rapids were embarrassed 3-0 at the Cotton Bowl against the Dallas Burn. Any positive aspect that the Rapids had in the San Jose game was gone. With an easy 90 minutes from Dallas, the Rapids were knocked out of the US Open Cup.
The same problems plagued the Rapids in their past two games. No defense. No midfield. No offense. No kidding. It seems that all of the problems that the Rapids had this season were multiplied.
Several things can of course be blamed on this bad spell:
1. One is the feekish amount of injuries the team has suffered this year. Chung, Rey Rey, Delgado, Pedro, and Kotschau have been playing with lingering injuries.
2. Another problem has been the inconsistent midfield. Chis Henderson has been the only middy that has shown any consistency.
3. The final problem may lie on the coach himself. Many are wondering if Tim Hankinson is really doing the best job he can. Many are blaming the clubs mediocrity on him.
It is really anybody guess of the exact nature of the problems and how to properly fix them. I'm not even sure myself on what needs to happen for the Rapids to find success. Perhaps we will get a better idea in Colorado's next game against the Columbus Crew. That game is scheduled for Saturday, July 24. Kickoff time is at 3:00 PM Mountain time. |
