Americans Abroad 8/17/04

Belgian Juliper League

Standard Liege vs Charleroi (1-2)

Oguchi Owenyu went the distance at center half for Standard Liege in a loss in their home opener. Good news for Oguchi is that he’s keeping his place in the starting lineup. It won’t be long until he starts to show up on Bruce Arena’s radar to get a spot on the national team.

8/14/04

English Premier League

Tottenham vs Liverpool (1-1)

Kasey Keller is on the bench as England #2 Paul Robinson gets the nod. Kasey will get some chances but it looks like “Déjà vu all over again” as he’ll have to outplay the young lad in training and in cup ties much he had to with Neil Sullivan back in 2001.

Blackburn vs West Bromwich Albion (1-1)

Brad Friedel gets fits in time to go the distance in a 1-1 draw. The Baggies goal came courtesy of Neil Clement’s 33rd minute deflected free-kick.

Manchester City vs. Fulham (1-1)

Yanks everywhere in this match!
Claudio Reyna starts in central midfield and goes the distance for City. Reyna played well taking free-kicks and getting one them on the head of Antoine Sibierski which was kept out by an incredible save by Fulham keeper Edwin Van Der Sar.

Carlos Bocanegra started and went the distance at left back. Most of his day was spent defending against City’s Shawn Wright-Phillips who caused him difficulty with his pace.

Brian McBride came on as a sub in the 63rd minute replacing Collins John who scored the equalizer for Fulham. Brian was very active during his time in the game. He got a head to just about every 50-50 ball in his direction. Late in the match City defender Richard Dunne fouled him close to the penalty area.

German Bundesliga

Mainz vs Hamburg (2-1)

Conor Casey came on in the 83rd minute as a sub replacing Claudius Weber in the home opener in front of 18,700 at Stadion am Bruchweg.

French Ligue 1

Nantes vs. Bastia (1-1)

Greg Vanney went the distance for the Corsicans at left back

English League Championship

Gillingham vs Preston North End (2-1)

Eddie Lewis went the distance for Preston playing on the left side of the midfield. He picked up his second yellow card in 2 games.

Sheffield United vs Reading (0-1)

Marcus Hahnemann collected his first clean sheet of the season as the Reading won on the road at Bramall Lane.
Bobby Convey got his first start of the season at left midfield. He was subbed out in the 74th minute in favor of Paul Brooker.

Dutch Eredivisie

RBC Roosendaal vs PSV Eindhoven (2-5)

DaMarcus Beasley made his Eredvisie debut. He was the lone American to score this week as he got the final goal for PSV in the 75th minute in a game which featured a hat-trick by Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink. His goal was vintage DMB as he beat 3 defenders on his way to scoring the goal. Beasley was subbed out in the 77th minute for Jefferson Farfan.

8/15/04

English Premier League

Chelsea vs Manchester United (1-0)

Tim Howard was in his customary spot as keeper for the Red devils. The lone goal was scored by Chelsea’s Eidur Gudjonsson. He came through to the box untouched and scored as Tim came off his line to defend the shot but Ediur put it past him on second effort despite a valiant attempt by Man Utd center half Roy Keane to deflect the shot.
