8/27/04

French Ligue 1

Nice vs Bastia (1-1)

Greg Vanney started once again in his customary left back position going the full 90 minutes. Bastia continue their good form with 8 points from 4 games. Tony Vairelles scored the equalizer late to put the Corsicans top of Ligue1 by 1 point.

English Premier League

Arsenal vs Blackburn (3-0)

Brad Friedel has the distinction of being the losing goaltender in the game that Arsenal won itís 43rd straight league game braking Nottingham Forestís record 42 wins in a row. Brad kept a clean sheet through the first half including a few stops of Thierry Henry. Arsenal capitalized on Blackburnís weak defense in the second half with goals from Henry, Fabregas, & Reyes. Blackburn now sits in a 4-way tie at the bottom of the table after 3 games with just 1 point.

Fulham vs Middlesbrough (0-2)

Carlos Bocanegra was responsible for giving Boroís Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink too much space as he hit the cross which resulted in a goal for Mark Viduka. He did make some good crosses in the second half to Diop and Radzinski which were not converted.

Brian McBride came on as a substitute for Collins John in the 62nd minute.

West Bromwich Albion vs Tottenham (1-1)

Kasey Keller was on the bench as Paul Robinson made his third consecutive start of the season.

UEFA Champions League

PSV Eindhoven vs Crvena Zvezda (aka Red Star Belgrade) (5-0) (7-3 on aggregate PSV advances)

DaMarcus Beasley scored PSVís second goal in the 32nd minute. Ji-Sung Park crossed into the box and DaMarcus just had to tap it home. In the 29th minute, he was hauled down by Milan Bisevac which was grounds for a red card forcing Crvena to play a man down the rest of the way. In the 57th minute, DMB assisted on the 4th goal with a header that found John de Jong who buried it to give PSV a 4-0 lead. DMB was subbed out in
the 60th minute for Leandro Do Bonfim as the rout was on.

Manchester United Dinamo Bucaresti (3-0) (5-1 on aggregate ManUtd advances)

Tim Howard collected a clean sheet as the Red Devils roll on to the next round of the Champions League. Tim was really only called into action on one occasion in stopping a low line drive shot from Dinamoís Stefen Grigorie.

Jonathan Spector got a surprise start in the left side of the defense as. This was the first time ManU had fielded 2 Americans in their starting lineup. Jonathan played a good game on both ends as he was also involved in the attack. Manchester United moves on to the group stages facing Lyon, Sparta Prague, & Fenerbahce.

English Carling Cup

Oxford United vs Reading (0-2)

Marcus Hahnemann got a clean sheet away at the Kassam Stadium as the Royals knocked Oxford United out of the Carling cup for the second year in a row.

Bobby Convey came on as a 85th minute sub for Glen Little.

English Premier League

Birmingham vs Manchester City (1-0)

Claudio Reyna started and played 90 minutes for City. City gave up an early 8th minute goal to Emile Heskey which was enough on this night at St. Andrews.

UEFA Champions League

Maccabi Haifa vs Rosenborg (2-3) (3-5 on aggregate Rosenborg advances)

Robbie Russell did appear in this game. He is still out due to injury. Rosenborg moves onto the group stages of the Champions League drawing Arsenal, Panathinaikos, & DaMarcus Beasleyís PSV Eindhoven.

DFB-Pokal (German Cup)

FSV Mainz vs VfR Aalen (5-2)

Conor Casey had the one of the best games an American has had to date. Casey scored a brace and assisted on the other 3 goals as he was a scoring machine for Mainz. His first goal came from a header on to a Niclas Weiland cross in the 23rd minute. The second goal came from some nifty play in a crowded penalty area where he was at the right place at the right time to poke it in at the 72nd minute. He also assisted on goals by Dennis Weiland, Niclas Weiland, & Fabian Gerber.

Next: 8/28 Hertha Berlin vs FSV Mainz

VfR Neuminster vs Hannover96 (0-3)

Steve Cherundolo got his first goal of the season in the 53rd minute as he was able to jump on a loose ball and beat the Neuminster keeper on a line drive shot that deflected off the post.

Clint Mathis did not play due to injury.

Next: 8/29 Borrusia Dortmund vs Hannover96

Dutch Eredvisie

Ajax vs NAC Breda (6-2)

John OíBrien is still nursing an injury and was not the lineup for this match.

Belgian Championnat

CS Bruges vs Standard Liege (1-3)

Oguchi Owenyu played 90 in a win for Standard Liege. He had a solid game in central defense for the Belgian side contributing to their first win of the season . Gooch picked up a yellow card in this match.

Norwegian Tippeligaen

Fredrikstad vs Odd Grenland (3-0)

Brian West started at striker and went the distance.

Wade Barrett did not play.

Swedish Second Division

Enkopings SK vs Bodens (0-0)

Brian Dunseth started and went the distance as Bodens continues to sit at the bottom of the table tied with Brage. Former MLS forward Wolde Harris started alongside Brian in this game.

English Premier League

Southampton vs Blackburn (3-2)

Brad Friedel was on the short end of this match as his defense let him down all afternoon. A penalty kick by James Beattie was the difference in this game. Brad gave a valiant effort as it was obvious that he wasnít fully healthy. Defender Nils-Eric Johannson took the goal kicks on this day.

Fulham vs Bolton (2-0)

Carlos Bocanegra went the distance in Fulhamís triumphant return to Craven Cottage. He had a tough assignment on this day as he found himself defending against Jay-Jay Okocha but as the scoreline showed Bolton did not get any goals.

Brian McBride came on in the 69th minute for Canadian international Tomas Radzinski. As both these guys played World Cup Qualifyers at mid-week, it was a struggle to be at full fitness.

Liverpool vs Manchester City (2-1)

Claudio Reyna went the distance in the loss at Anfield. Reyna was somewhat responsible for giving up the tying goal when a bad clearance was picked up by England midfielder Steven Gerrard who found Milan Baros who buried it past City keeper David James.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham (0-1)

Kasey Keller did not get off the bench for this match as his Spurs teammates came up with a big win at St James Park. Timothee Atouba scored the winner on 51 minutes. Tottenham keeper Paul Robinson made 6 saves on this day including 2 important saves on Newcastleís James Milner and Laurent Robert.

Manchester United vs Norwich (2-1)

Tim Howard was not real busy on this day as he faced only 2 shots on goal in what was Manchester Unitedís first win of the season.

English League Championship
Reading vs Rotherham (1-0)

Marcus Hahnemann got his second consecutive clean sheet as Reading continues a hot start to the season with 3 wins out of 4. Dave Kitson hit a penalty just before half-time which proved to be enough on this day.

Bobby Convey made his second consecutive start for the Royals.

French Ligue 1

Bastia vs AC Ajaccio (1-0)

Greg Vanney went the distance in the first edition of the Corsican derby. Bastia continue their fine form going unbeaten through their first 3 matches. Gregís corner kick on the 70th minute took a fortunate bounce off a Bastia teammate only to find itís way to Fabrice Jau who buried it for the gameís only goal.

Dutch Eredvisie

PSV Eindhoven vs AZ Alkmaar (5-1)

DaMarcus Beasley started in his customary left wing position. He was subbed out in the 50th minute for Leandro Do Bonfim.


8/20/04

English League Championship

Preston North End vs Sheffield United (0-1)

Eddie Lewis started and went the distance for Preston as they lost their second in a row and have gone winless in their last three. Eddie had a couple of good chances. One was was a hard shot on goal which was tipped away from goal by Blades keeper Paddy Kenny. Another was from a free-kick which hit the top of the crossbar.

Note: As my Swedish & Norwegian improve, expect to see more detailed reports from those leagues.
