Americans Abroad 9/5
8/31/04

English League Championship

Reading vs Sunderland (1-0)

Marcus Hahnemann: Marcus picked up his 3rd clean sheet of the year in leading Reading to a 1-0 victory over the Black Cats. A second minute goal by Nicky Forster was enough as a stingy Royal defense made for a quiet day between the pipes for Hahnemann. Marcus had to make just two saves of note. One on Irish defender Gary Breen who had an opportunity on a header in the first half which was pulled in by Hahnemann. The second opportunity came again on a header as Sunderland defender Neil Collins which was pulled in cleanly by Hahnemann.

Bobby Convey: Bobby was not in the lineup for this game.

English Premiership

Manchester United vs Everton (0-0)

Tim Howard: Tim picked up his first clean sheet of the year in this lackluster affair as Red Devils earn a draw against the pesky Merseysiders. Tim faced a mere 2 shots on goal from Everton. Tim saved his fellow American youngster Jonathan Spector early on as he stopped midfielder Kevin Kilbane coming through untouched after stealing the ball from Spector in the middle of the park. The only other save of note was one he made Australian international Tim Cahill on low shot which Tim got down low for a block.

Jonathan Spector: Jon got his second consecutive Premier League start. With the exception of the gaffe against Kilbane, the young man from Illinois had another good performance. Once again, just like last week, he found his way into the attack and even got a shot off on goal which was just wide. It should be interesting to see if Jon is still in the lineup against Bolton as Rio Ferdinand will be retuning to the lineup.

Portsmouth vs Fulham (4-3)

Carlos Bocanegra: Good news, Carlos got a late goal to cut the lead to 4-3. Boca headed in a free kick from Luis Boa Morte just 11 minutes from time. Bad news, Alyegbeni Yakubu had a career day is he picked up a hat-trick for Pompey. The Cottagers looked rather disoriented on defense as they sprung leaks all over the place giving Portsmouth ample chances on net (13 to be exact). Manager Chris Coleman had complained about the effort of his team as Fulham’s defense, which was one of the better defensive teams in the Premier League last year is having a lot of difficulty this year with essentially the same personnel.

Brian McBride: Brian came on as a sub for the 4th time this season replacing midfielder Sylvain Legwinski in the 86th minute hoping to add an extra spark to the offense late as Fulham was going for the equalizer.

English League Championship

Preston vs Rotherham (2-0)

Eddie Lewis: Eddie was delivering dangerous crosses all day long. Lewis had a hand in the first of Dickson Etuhu 2 goals scored on the day. A Lewis cross was headed on by Preston’s Richard Cresswell which found Etuhu who sent it on home for the first Preston goal. This was Preston first win following three straight losses and only their second win in six matches. This was also the first match since manager Craig Brown resigned/was forced out as he was replaced by Billy Davies who looks to be in charge on an interim basis.

Portuguese Superliga

Academica vs Sporting Braga (2-2)

Kenny Cooper: Welcome to a brand new member of the ranks of Americans Abroad. Striker Kenny Cooper joins Academica on loan from Manchester United. Kenny came on for Tixier in the 78th minute as Academica tried to add more punch to go for the winner.

German Bundesliga

Borussia Dortmund vs Hannover 96 (1-1)

Steve Cherundolo: Hannover came away with a point at the Westfalen Stadium in front of 74,000. Steve started the game at his customary right back position. He had the unenviable task of defending against Czech striker Jan Koller who on one occasion got by him as Cherundolo tried to catch him offside and got off a shot deflecting off the post. Hannover picked up the tying goal 2 minutes into stoppage time by defender Per Metresacker.

Clint Mathis: Cletus made his first start of the year playing in an attacking midfield position just behind the strikers. Clint had a great chance in the first half 3 minutes into the game. Mathis latched onto a long ball from teammate Michael Tarnat going in all alone on the Dortmund keeper Guillaume Warmuz but was dispossessed at the last minute unable to get by Warmuz. In the 65th minute, he was subbed out for Fonseca Leandro.

Dutch Eredvisie

Ajax vs FC Utrecht (1-1)

John O’Brien: John is still out recovering from an injury. Manager Ronald Koeman was not pleased with his defense in the draw with Utrecht mentioning that they should have done better. Hopefully, when John is back to full strength, he can regain his position at left back.

Norwegian Tippeligaen

Molde vs Rosenborg (1-3)

Robbie Russell: Robbie returned to the starting lineup as Rosenborg won their second consecutive game on the road at Molde. Rosenborg sit top of the table with 39 points 4 points clear of Tromso with 7 games to go. Rosenborg is also gearing up for Champions League play in Group E. This is a difficult group with Arsenal, Panathinaikos, and what should be interesting matchup of 2 yanks when they meet DaMarcus Beasley’s PSV Eindhoven.

Next: 9/11-Rosenborg vs Valerenga
9/14-Panathinaikos vs Rosenborg (Champions League)

Sogndal vs Fredrikstad (2-4)

Brian West: Brian started up front with fellow striker Markus Ringberg. West assisted on the first goal of the day for Fredrikstad scored by Ringberg. With just seven games remaining FFK sit 13th in the table 4 points clear of Sogndal and 1 point behind Stabaek.

Wade Barrett: Wade did not appear in the lineup for this game.

Next: 9/12-Fredrikstad vs HamKam

FC Saarbrucken vs Energie Cottbus (0-0)

Gregg Berhalter: Gregg did not appear in the lineup as he is still nursing an injury.

Bodens vs Atvidabergs FF (1-1)

Brian Dunseth: Brian went the distance in this game as a central defender. He also picked up a yellow card in this game. Bodens got the tying goal from a familiar face as MLS alumnus Wolde Harris scored in the 57th minute. With 8 games remaining, Bodens sit in the relegation zone in 14th place with 17 points.

English Premiership

Blackburn vs Manchester United (1-1)

Brad Friedel: Brad had what is arguably the one of the best performances from a goalkeeper that I have seen in recent times. The Red Devils peppered him with 15 shots on goal. Freidel was up to the task time and time again. He made 2 great saves in the first half. One on Kleberson’s shot from about 30 yards out which was tipped out and the second on Alan Smith who was in the penalty area and denied by Friedel from close range. In the second half, Man Utd came on like a juggernaut with Friedel parrying shot after shot. In the 90th minute Alan Smith came up with the tying goal on what appeared to be a handball on Louis Saha which fell to Smith for the goal.

Tim Howard: Tim was not nearly as busy as his American compatriot at the other end as he faced just four shouts. Paul Dickov did beat him in the 17th minute as defender Michael Silvestre gave up too much room to the Scottish International who beat Howard on the left side of goal to give Blackburn an early 1-0 lead.

Jonathan Spector: Jon got off to a little bit of a shaky start. He had some trouble controlling the ball early on but collected himself and turned in a pretty good game thereafter. Once again, he got involved in the offense as late in the first half he raced to the Blackburn endline to save a ball from going out for a goal kick only to find Paul Scholes who was denied by Friedel. One a couple of other occasions he found Cristiano Ronaldo with the outlet pass for a few good opportunities.

Next: 9/11-Newcastle United vs Blackburn

Manchester City vs Charlton (4-0)

Claudio Reyna: Claudio started and went the distance in his customary central midfield role as Manchester City picked up their first victory of the season at home against Charlton. He did not figure in any of the scoring as Nicholas Anelka scored two for the home side.

Next: 9/11 Manchester City vs Everton

Tottenham vs Birmingham (1-0)

Kasey Keller: Kasey was on the bench for this match as the Spurs continue their good form staying unbeaten through the first 4 games of the season. Spurs keeper Paul Robinson was not busy on this day as he was called on to make just 2 saves.

Next: 9/12 Tottenham vs Norwich

German Bundesliga

Hertha Berlin vs Mainz (1-1)

Conor Casey: Conor got his first start of the season as Mainz picked up a valuable point on the road at the Olympia Stadion in Berlin. Mainz will be fighting against much bigger clubs all season long so a point on the road isn’t so bad. Casey spent most of this game as the lone target man up front. He did pick up a yellow card in this match. Mainz got the equalizer from Jurgen Krammy off a free kick in the 79th minute.

Next: 9/11 Mainz vs Bayer Leverkusen

English League Championship

Millwall vs Reading (1-0)

Marcus Hahnemann: Marcus played in his 100th match and had no chance on the goal by Millwall’s Danny Dichio who headed in the ball from defender Darren Ward. His only other real action was a save early on midfielder David Livermore whose header attempt was knocked out for a corner.

Bobby Convey: Bobby came on as sub in the 14th minute for Glen Little who left with a hamstring injury. Convey was active throughout the match making individual runs as well as providing accurate crosses into the box. Early on he was brought down on a harsh challenge by Millwall’s player-manager Dennis Wise. Later he was sandwiched by 2 defenders as made a beeline toward goal. At the 62nd minute, Bobby missed a golden opportunity to get a goal as striker Nicky Forster’s shot was knocked away by Millwall’s goalkeeper Graham Stack which fell right to Bobby who hit it way over the goal.

Brighton vs Preston North End (1-0)

Eddie Lewis: Preston suffered an unlucky defeat to Brighton as a 30th minute own goal by defender Marlon Broomes was to be the only tally of the match. Eddie started in his normal left midfield position. In usual fashion, Eddie was the provider to the forwards with crosses into the box. Early on he forced a save from Brighton keeper Michel Kuipers. This was to be the last game for Preston manager Craig Brown who resigned following the game.

Dutch Eredvisie

NAC Breda vs PSV Eindhoven (2-2)

DaMarcus Beasley: PSV picked up a draw on the road in this game against Earnie Stewart’s former club with a late goal from Gerald Sibon. DaMarcus started this game at his normal left wing position. DMB did not figure in any of the goals. He was subbed out in the 69th minute for Brazilian Leandro Do Bonfim.
