Revolution suffer major blow to play-off hopes
Chicago, Ills. Ė Just 7 days after beating the first place Colorado Rapids 6 to 1, the last place New England Revolution were unable to overcome the 9th place Chicago Fire, suffering a 2-0 loss. The loss puts the Revs 5 points behind the Fire for the fourth and final playoff spot with just three games remaining. Despite creating some great chances and controlling the majority of the possession in the second half, the Revs were unable to put anything past Fire goalkeeper Henry Ring.

The Revolution had a great chance to take the lead in the 2nd minute, when Richie Baker ran onto a great through ball from Clint Dempsey. Baker ran in on goal alone and was one on one with Ring. Bakerís shot from 12 yards out, however, was right at Ring.

The Fire got onto the scoreboard in the 7th minute, went Nate Jaqua made a run down the right flank before sending a pass to Chris Armas. Armas, clear of the Revolution defense charged towards goal and drew out goalie Matt Reis before sending a square ball to Andy Herron, who sent the ball into the open net as the Revolution defense desperately appealed for offsides to no avail.

The Revs pushed forward in the second half only to see shots in the 57th minute by Taylor Twellman and the 61st minute by Clint Dempsey right at Henry Ring. Dempsey would later receive a yellow card meaning heíll miss the Revolutionís next match because of yellow card accumulation.

Chicago doubled their lead in the 77th minute when Armas received a long pass from Andy Williams and charged down the right flank. Armas crossed the ball into the box where Heron was waiting at the back post to slot it in for his second goal of the night and second of the season.

The Revs continued to create chances putting 8 shots on target compared to Chicagoís 3, but they were unable to break through. The Revolution hosts Dallas on October 2nd at 7:30PM desperately needing a win to keep playoff hopes alive.
