Revs lose to D.C., playoff hopes to be decided in final game of season
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The New England Revolution (7-13-9) have been unable to win two games in a row all season and that didn’t change on Saturday, October 9th, as the Revs fell 1-0 to D.C. United. Thanks to a Chicago loss on Wednesday, however, the Revs are one win back from Chicago for the fourth and final playoff spot with their last game of the season at home on October 16th against the Fire. With a Revs win, they would win the tie-breaker and be headed to their third straight postseason.

Jose Cancela almost gave the Revs the lead in the 2nd minute, but his free kick curled over the wall and was saved by a diving Nick Rimando.

The Revs should have taken the lead 7 minutes later when a Steve Ralston cross was punched to Taylor Twellman by Rimando. Twellman’s bicycle kick attempt deflected to Clint Dempsey, but the rookie sent his shot right at Rimando as he was getting back off the ground.

D.C. United took the lead in the 32nd minute, when a Ben Olsen cross was headed down to Christian Gomez by Alecko Eskandarian. Gomez shot beat a diving Matt Reis for his second goal of the year.

Ben Olsen had a good chance in the 54th minute, but his close-range shot was right at a well positioned Reis.

Josh Gros was lucky to not be ejected when he hit Brian Kamler in the face after a foul had already been called. Somehow Gros only received a yellow card. Kamler would receive a yellow card three minutes later for a very soft foul.

Dema Kovalenko received a yellow card in the 61st minute for a violent tackle on
Jose Cancela. A minute later Kovalenko would see his shot saved by Reis. In the 74th minute Kovalenko was ejected for a second yellow when he took out Clint Dempsey from behind.

The Revs should have had an indirect free kick in the box when Nick Rimando picked up a pass back from his own team mate. Somehow a foul was called against Pat Noonan instead. Replays show Noonan made no contact with any D.C. player on the incident.

The Revs next come back to Foxboro to face Chicago in the final game of the regular season on Saturday, October 16th. A win would see the Revs make the playoffs for the third straight year, while a loss or tie would see the Revs season end early.
