Revs defeat unbeatable
FOXBORO, MA. – The New England Revolution hadn’t won two games in a row all season and the Columbus Crew hadn’t lost since June. Yet after winning the last game of the season against Chicago the Revs managed to win two games in a row for the first time in a year defeating the Columbus Crew 1 to 0 in game one of the two game total goal conference semifinal series. With most of the New England area focused on the Red Sox, only a small crowd of just under 6,000 fans bore witness to the most impressive performance of the Revs all season.

The Revolution exposed Columbus’ weaknesses early with their pressure causing many turnovers by the Crew. Their quick passing kept them in possession and created some great scoring chances early on. Taylor Twellman sent a header off a Steve Ralston cross just over the goal in the 13th minute and 6 minutes later a quick Cancela free kick sent Joseph on a break-away only to be denied by Crew goalie Jon Busch.

The Revs took the lead in the 25th minute from an unexpected source. After receiving the ball from Ralston about 40 yards from goal, defender Avery John continued to dribble forward as no Crew defenders challenged him. John got 25 yards out before sending a hard blast that curved into the upper left corner of the net past a diving Busch for his first career MLS goal. “My first instinct was to shoot it from 40,” John said of the goal. “You never know what can happen with the wind. Nobody closed me down, so I think I traveled like five to 10 yards, nobody closed me, and once you get toward the top of the 18 and no one closed me, you have a pop on goal. I hit it well. I kept it down and it went in."

The Crew’s best chance of the match came right before half time when Matt Reis was adjudged to have picked the ball back up after putting in down. Not only was the call questionable, but Edson Buddle, who already had a yellow card, threw a punch at Reis that went unnoticed by the referee. The result was an indirect free kick, which was flicked to Ross Paule, who sent a cracking shot on goal. Reis managed to punch it over the bar.

Marshall Leonard had a great chance in the 62nd minute when he received the ball from a header by Taylor Twellman. A diving Busch saved Leonard’s shot from close range.

Kyle Martino threatened to score in the 77th minute, but his shot was denied by a diving Reis.

The Revs had two chances in the final minutes of the match. Twellman sent a header off a cross from substitute Andy Dorman just wide of the net. Later, Pat Noonan received a great long ball from Shalrie Joseph before beating two defenders with cutback moves and sending a shot that was just wide of the net.
