Reis beats Columbus, Revs advance to Conference Final
COLUMBUS, OH. – Matt Reis saved an MLS Playoff record two penalty kicks as he led the Revs to a 1-1 tie against Columbus giving them a 2-1 aggregate goal playoff victory over the Crew. Columbus won the Supporters Shield with a league best 12-5-13 record and were the first team who won the Supporters Shield to be knocked out of the playoffs in the first round. Reis recorded only four saves, but was clearly the man of the match. Besides his two penalty kick saves Reis dove backwards to deny Dante Washington a shot on an empty net.

The Crew’s Tony Sanneh had the first good chance of the match in the 14th minute, but his header off of a Duncan Oughton pass, was easily saved by Reis.

Taylor Twellman created a chance for the Revs in the 20th minute when he dribbled around the Crew defense before sending a pass to Clint Dempsey at the top of the box. Dempsey, one of three Rookie of the Year candidates, saw his hard shot saved by a diving Jon Busch.

The Crew had their best chance of the half in the 24th minute when Kyle Martino easily intercepted a weak back pass by Avery John to goalie Matt Reis. Reis came out to challenge, but ended up taking out Martino and referee Alex Prus pointed to the spot for a penalty kick. The Crew had converted their last 20 penalty kicks and with Ross Paule, who hadn’t missed a penalty kick all year, coming to the spot they seemed certain to erase the Revs one goal lead they had coming into the match. Paule took this PK the same as he had taken every other one, sending it hard with the outside of his foot to Reis’ left. Reis showed his athleticism by making a great diving save to his left to deny Paule’s shot and he quickly ran out to smother the rebound.

The Revs all-time leading goal scorer, Taylor Twellman had a chance to push the Revs further in front four minutes later, but he dribbled a little too far as he went one on one with Jon Busch. Busch charged out and manage to grab the ball before Twellman could get a shot off.

Just before halftime, the Crew had another great chance as Dante Washington received the ball from Duncan Oughton and tried to dribble around Reis. Washington seemed to have gotten past him, but Reis dove backwards and grabbed the ball off Washington’s feet just before he shot to prevent an almost certain goal.

As the Revs were arguing for a foul, Reis made one of his few mistakes of the night as he received a back pass and dribbled out of the box. Jeff Cunningham stole the ball and sent it to Ross Paule, who sent a one-time shot on the open net. Avery John, whose poor back-pass earlier almost cost the Revs a goal, managed to sprint back and block the ball before it crossed the line, covering for Reis’ mistake as Reis had done for him earlier.

With less than 20 minutes to go, the Crew had another chance to score when another mistake by Avery John gave the Crew another penalty kick. This time John took out Jeff Cunningham in the box. Tony Sanneh stepped up to take the penalty and tried a stutter step run-up to the ball to try to trick Matt Reis. Sanneh’s shot, however, to Reis’ right was softly hit and easily saved by a diving Matt Reis. The two penalty kick saves were the first time in MLS Playoff history that had happened and just the third time in league history (regular and postseason play).

Taylor Twellman wasted a golden opportunity for the Revs 11 minutes before halftime, when he sent a one-time shot off a Clint Dempsey pass high of the net. Two minutes later, however Twellman wouldn’t miss. Rookie Andy Dorman received the ball from Dempsey before taking it into the box and drawing out Jon Busch. Dorman than sent a pass to Twellman, who slammed it into the empty net.

The Crew were able to get back with in one in stoppage time as Edson Buddle received a long pass from Tony Sanneh, before dribbling past Jay Heaps and sending a shot past a charging Matt Reis. The Crew, however, were unable to create any good scoring chances after that.

The win marks the first time in league history the Supporter’s Shield winner was knocked out in the first round of the playoffs. The win also puts the Revs into the Eastern Conference Final for the third straight year. No other team has made it to the Conference final all three years. The Revs travel to D.C. to face a D.C. United squad missing Captain Ryan Nelson and starter Dema Kovalenko to suspension. The game will be at 7:00PM and can be seen live on Fox Sports World, HDNet, The MLS Direct Kick Package and a local network to be decided.
