New England Revolution at San Jose Earthquakes Preview
Date/Time: 4/2/04, 10:00PM ET
TV: Fox Sports New England, MLSNet
Radio: WRKO 680, RevolutionSoccer.net

Predicted Starting XI:
San Jose:
-------Ching-------Cerritos-------
Davis-----------------------Mullan
--------Clark----O’Rourke-------
Barret-Dayak-Robinson-Waibel
----------------Onstad-------------

New England:
--------------Twellman--------------
---------Cancela--Dempsey--------
Noonan---------------------Ralston
----------------Joseph---------------
Franchino-John-Parkhurst-Heaps
------------------Reis----------------

Comments: MLSNet has the Revs playing a 4-4-2 with Dempsey and Twellman up front. When they had this listed last year it turned out to be more of a 4-5-1 with Dempsey sliding into the midfield. Expect that again here.

Injuries:
SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES - OUT: DF Danny Califf (R knee MCL sprain); QUESTIONABLE: Orlando Ramirez (R groin strain); PROBABLE: Brian Mullan (L ankle sprain)
NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION - OUT: GK Kyle Singer (R shoulder sprain); MF Felix Brillant (L ankle sprain); QUESTIONABLE: DF Carlos Llamosa (R groin strain)

Prediction: NE 2 – San Jose 1
San Jose lost some quality players in the offseason, including Landon Donovan, Richard Mulrooney, Jeff Agoos and Ronnie Ekelund. They’ve shored up their defense adding Wade Barrett and Danny Califf, but Califf won’t be available for this game due to injury.

The Revs have kept their starting 11 mostly intact, losing starters Brian Kamler and Rusty Pierce to the expansion draft. Also gone are goalie Adin Brown and forward Joe-Max Moore. Midfielder Cassio was brought in to replace Kamler and could see action as a sub. The Revs used the Superdraft to address their issues at defense.

The Revs haven’t won their season opener in 8 years and are well overdue for a victory. Expect the Revs to come out on top of a very close game.
