Metros tie RSL 0-0
The MetroStars opened their season at home as they took on expansion team Real Salt Lake. In a game full of weather the MetroStars were unable to break through and the game ended in a scoreless draw. Both teams fought hard to score a goal, but the wind and rain took control of the game making it almost impossible to place the ball perfectly. An exciting match ended with a shutout for both young keepers on Saturday night.

In the early moments of the match the MetroStars had full control of the game. The first good chance came around the 7th minute as Sergio Galvan Rey sent John Wolyniec on a great run. As he closed in on goal he chipped it past goalkeeper DJ Countess and watched the ball roll its way into the net. As he went to celebrate he soon found that he was offside during the play and the goal would not count.

As the match grew older the conditions just seemed to get worse. As goal kicks were taken another player would have to hold the ball with the sole of his foot as the goalkeeper went up to strike it. On one occasion this method paid off, as the MetroStars young goalkeeper Zach Wells knocked the ball into play from a goal kick. It found its way to Galvan Rey who made his way into the box. As Galvan Rey controlled he was unable to get a good hit on the ball, and it bounced straight into Countessí feet.

Several minutes before halftime the whether conditions posed a problem to the match. Due to the rain and winds during the game there was a small power outage throughout the stadium. In effect the half of the lights shut off, making the field a dim sight during the night. The scoreboard and clock were also shut off. As the referee blew the whistle for a pause, the players came in to discuss the situation. After the power had returned several minutes later they agreed to finish up the remaining time in the first half, then take their half time break.

Early into the second half Salt Lake came out with passion. Having the wind with them, they took control of the game during the opening minutes of the second half. Great fast paced attacks by Salt Lake lead to golden opportunities. In their first great chance of the night Andy Williams sent a great ball into the box that found Jason Kreis, unfortunately he drilled the ball wide.

As the second half got older the MetroStars began to adjust to the wind. They started to take more control of the ball and doing so, gave them control of the game. Many chances would follow the best coming when a pass into the box by Eddie Gaven found itís way to John Woylniec. Wolyniec threw his body towards the ball to get a touch on it, and thatís what he did. The shot rocketed towards net, but Countess was able to come up with a reaction save onto the ball to keep the game level.

During the last moment of the match the MetroStars were awarded a free kick. Due to whether conditions the ball was held once again by the sole of a playerís foot. Doing so caused a rule conflict as the referee was unsure what to do. The Salt Lake players rushed at the ball as soon as the whistle was blown and the playerís foot was rested on the ball, claiming it was in play. The MetroStars argued and wanted a re-kick but it wouldnít happen; the game ended during the argument.

The MetroStars will not play next week. They will return to action the following week as they stay at home to take on the Kansas City Wizards. The game kicks off at 7:30 PM, Saturday at Giants Stadium. The game will be televised on MSG and MLS Direct Kick.
