Metros and Real battle weather, and each other to 0-0 draw.
BY TRAVER MAYFIELD
GIANTS STADIUM, April 2—More rain then a monsoon, gale force like winds, and even a power outage did not cause there to be a lack of a soccer game at Giants Stadium tonight. Goals though were another matter as the Metros and the expansion team Real Salt Lake drew 0-0.

“My first thought was ‘uh oh’,” RSL keeper’ DJ Countess told mlsnet.com, “It’s one of those games where an ‘uh oh’ can happen, its not going to be a clear sunny 75 degree day.”

The game started off evenly as both teams felt each other out. The weather would affect the Metros adversely early in the first half as a Metros counter was called back offside, the culprit, an errant pass caused by the wet pitch.

The weather would actually aid the Metros minutes later as Zach Wells’ goal kick (aided by ‘holder’ Chris Letich) was carried by the wind sending Sergio Galvan Rey one on one with Countess. His shot though went right into Countess’ chest.

The first chance in Real Salt Lake history came in the 23rd minute as Andy Williams’ errant cross found managed to find Clint Mathis, who was playing his first game against his former club, but was easily saved by Wells. Mathis’ shot came seconds after a drive from former US international Jeff Agoos was saved by Countess.

The half was in danger in the 40th minute as some of Giants Stadiums’ floodlights temporarily lost power. But the Stadiums’ emergency generators allowed the half to finish with a direct free kick from new Metros captain Amado Guevara that would bend far right.

The second half started different though as Real Salt Lake came out with the wind at their backs aiding them in their attack. The wind almost got them a goal as Dipsy Selowane chested a long pass before laying it off to Jason Kreis who fired wide of the goal.

Eddie Gaven would create the best chance of the game in the 57th minute as his blazing run and resulting cross found Wolyneic’s head. Countess saved the initial shot but coughed up the rebound to Galven Rey but his header went wide.

Neither team was able to really gain an advantage in the final third of the game. With the weather not improving both teams seemed to be content with a point as the whistle blew.

"Obviously it's a crazy night. I don't think anybody has played under those conditions.” MetroStars Head Coach Bob Bradley told mlsnet.com, “(But) we need to leave that alone and move forward."

MetroStars defender Carlos Mendes was named metrofanatic.com hero of the match while Countess was named mlsnet.com man of the match.

“Carlos Mendes has had a very good preseason,” said Bradley, Even though he is new in this league he's got a couple years experience with Rochester. We're pleased to have him. I think he is going to be a good player."

Countess was eager to deflect praise to his teamates. "Its not just me getting the shutout. It's the team getting a shutout." Countess told mlsnet.com, "My team got the shutout, I didnt."

The MetroStars nest game with be on April 16 as they host the Kansas City Wizards at Giants Stadium. Real on the other hand will be playing this Saturday taking on the Los Angeles Galaxy at the Home Depot Center.
