Revs leave Chivas till late, extend winning streak with 88th minute goal
Foxboro, MA. – The first place, undefeated New England Revolution extended their winning streak to four games with a dominating performance in heavy rain, resulting in a 1-0 victory over expansion team Chivas USA. Clint Dempsey was the hero for the Revolution again, scoring the game’s only goal in the 88th minute. The win moved the Revs to 4-0-1 on the season with Dempsey having the game-winning goal in all four wins as he leads the league in scoring.

The Revs took control of the match from the opening whistle and held it for the whole match. However, Chivas’ defense held strong for much of the match stopping many Revolution attacks throughout the game. Twellman had the first good chance for the Revs in the 25th minute, but saw his effort from 10 yards out, blocked by a sliding Douglas Sequiera.

The Revs had another chance in the 32nd minute, when Steve Ralston got around Ryan Suarez and sent a cross into the box. Sequiera deflected the cross, but it fell right to Taylor Twellman six yards from goal. Twellman saw his shot saved by Chivas goalie Brad Guzan, who had the best game of his MLS career. Guzan did give up a rebound and it fell right to Clint Dempsey, who would see his shot blocked.

Two minutes before half time, Pat Noonan saw a nice volley from twelve yards out denied by Guzan.

Chivas saw a goal disallowed in the 54th, when Thiago Martins hammered home a cross into the back of the net. Ryan Suarez had gone up for a bicycle kick on the cross and ended up missing and kicking Shalrie Joseph in the face, so referee Kevin Terry blew for the foul previous to the goal being scored.

Dempsey had a great chance to put the Revs on top in the 72nd minute, when Jose Cancela sent a curling free kick into the box. Dempsey’s diving header connected, but sent the ball just wide of the net.

Taylor Twellman had a good chance five minutes later, but his header off a deflected Marshall Leonard shot went just high of the net.

Ryan Suarez was issued a yellow card a minute later for a tackle from behind on Twellman that sent him into the advertisement boards on the sidelines. Both players were a little shaken, but got back up and were not substituted.

Marshall Leonard had a chance in the 82nd minute, but saw his shot cleared off the line by Jesus Ochoa.

Clint Dempsey finally scored the game winner in the 88th minute. Marshall Leonard got past Ezra Hendrickson before sending a left-footed cross into the box that Dempsey sent into the back of the net with a diving header. The goal was his league-leading fourth of the year.

"I think tonight is a big step for us to be honest,” said Head Coach Steve Nicol after the match. “After winning the last two games, it was important that we try to finish it off tonight. I thought the way we went about it was ideal. The reason we scored in the 88th minute was because the team stayed disciplined. We kept trying to do the things we wanted to do from the first minute and that's why we won again."

With the win, the Revs continued to improve upon the best start in team history, their five game unbeaten streak and their four game winning streak. The Revs currently lead the league in scoring and have the second best goals against average. The Revs now sit alone in first place of both the East and the league.
