Revs stay unbeaten, comeback to tie Metrostars
|
East Rutherford, NJ. – Taylor Twellman scored twice on Saturday to lead the undefeated Revs in a 2-2 tie against the Metrostars. The Revs took the lead very early in the game only to allow a goal within ten minutes and then fall behind with less than ten minutes to go. Twellman proved the hero scoring the game-tying goal just a minute before the end of regulation. Twellman got the Revs off the mark in the 6th minute. Pat Noonan received a nice through ball from Steve Ralston, before chipping the ball into the path of Twellman. Twellman knocked it home with a nice volley that hit goalie Zach Wells, before going off the post and into the net. The Metrostars tied the game ten minutes later, when Tim Ward received the ball from Amado Guevara before sending a cross into the path of Eddie Gaven. Gaven’s shot left Rev’s goalie Matt Reis with no chance and ended his league-leading shutout streak at 384 minutes. The streak also ranked 8th all-time in that category. Clint Dempsey created a great chance for himself in the 600h minute, but his header off a Steve Ralston cross went just high. Khano Smith entered the game for Marshall Leonard in the 61st minute and became an immediate threat on the left wing with his well-placed driving crosses. The Metrostars were forced to play a man down in the 66th minute, when 18-year-old forward Abbe Ibrahim was ejected after receiving his second yellow card. Pat Noonan had a great chance to put the Revs back on top in the 74th minute, when he got free of the Metrostars defense and was one-on-one with Metrostars ‘keeper Zach Wells. Wells came charging off his line and Noonan shot right at him for an easy save. The Metrostars took the lead in the 83rd minute, when John Wolyniec slid into a Mike Magee cross, redirecting it past Reis and into the net. Taylor Twellman tied it up in the 89th minute with his league-leading sixth goal of the season. Khano Smith sent a hard left-footed cross into the box that Twellman headed off the post and into the net. The Revs continued to pressure into stoppage time and Pat Noonan saw a shot from the top of the box go just wide before the final whistle. "To get a point on the road, most coaches would take that. Obviously we had the opportunity to get all three but we didn't. But we got something out of the game and I think that is what we deserved," Head Coach Steve Nicol said to MLSNet.com after the game. The Revs, now 6-0-2, and sitting comfortably in first place, face the 11th place Colorado Rapids on May 28th at Gillette Stadium. The game can be seen live on WB56 at 7:30PM. The Revs will be without Clint Dempsey and Steve Ralston who will be with the US National Team for their match versus England earlier in the day in Chicago.
