US advances to semifinals of Gold Cup
Foxboro, MA. – The US Men’s National Team defeated Jamaica 3-1 in the CONCACAF Gold Cup quarterfinals to advance to the semifinals where they will face Honduras. For the first time in the tournament, the US got out to an early lead and held it for the whole match.

Josh Wolff scored the first goal of the match in the sixth minute on a play that started out strangely. The ball crossed the touchline and it seemed as if it would be a US throw in. Landon Donovan, however, took it as a corner kick and despite much complaining from the referee he allowed play to go on. DaMarcus Beasley received it from Donovan on a short corner and dribbled it into the box, before sending a shot on target. Josh Wolff deflected it past the reach of goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts for his first goal of the tournament. The Jamaican team continued to protest, but to no avail.

Just a minute later, Jamaica earned a penalty kick when Greg Vanney took down Ricardo Fuller in the box. Andy Williams took the penalty, sending a hard shot to goalie Kasey Keller’s left. Keller, however was equal to it and made a spectacular diving save to prevent the goal.

Steve Cherundolo was forced to leave the game in the 21st minute with an injury after Damion Stewart took him down with a completely reckless studs up challenge for which he received a yellow card. Cherundolo was replaced four minutes later by Ben Olsen.

DaMaracus Beasley doubled the lead in the 42nd minute, when Landon Donovan broke Beasley free of the defense with a great through ball. Free of his marker, Beasley easily slotted it past Ricketts.

Ben Olsen was ejected in the 58th minute for a foul on Andy Williams. Olsen was caught out of position, beaten by Williams and then pulled him down from behind to prevent him from being one-on-one with Keller. A man down, but with their two goal lead in tact, the US still almost gave up a goal, with Khari Stevenson taking the free kick and seeing it beat Keller before bouncing off the post.

Jamaica took control of the game after going up a man and created many chances, but poor finishing and good saves by Keller kept Jamaica off the scoreboard.

The field was evened in the 66th minute, when Jermaine Taylor was ejected for a reckless foul on Beasley.

The US then took over control of the game, but were unable to add to their lead till the 83rd minute due to very poor finishing. Donovan ran into the box on a break-away and rounded Ricketts, but stopped, seeming to be expecting a call or something and soon saw two defenders in his way. He waited and passed back to Chris Armas who then sent it to Beasley. Beasley got a lucky first touch for an easy left footed finish.

Jamaica got one back in the 88th minute when Ricardo Fuller got free of the US defense and sent it past a helpless Keller.

The US could’ve made it 4-1 in the 93rd minute when John O’Brien was taken down in the box by Garfield Reid. Donovan took the ensuing penalty kick, but saw his shot bang off the crossbar.

“I think we played well today,” said U.S. Manager Bruce Arena. “It was our best game of the tournament. We were able to get a little closer to having our starting group in there and I think they did well. Technically [they were] good passing the ball today, and [had] good quickness. If we were at fault for anything, I think we were pretty sloppy in dealing with the game. It was 2-0 at halftime and [we shouldn’t have been] putting ourselves into situations we put ourselves in, in the second half. However, at the end of the day, 3-1 is a good result and we look forward to playing Honduras in New Jersey.”

With the win, the US advance to play Honduras on July 21st at Giants Stadium in the Gold Cup Semifinals.
