Chivas upsets Revs in battle of first vs. last
Carson, CA. Ė The first place New England Revolution fell to the last place Chivas USA 1-0 on Friday, July 22nd. Currently with a record of 10-3-5, the Revs have had some struggles as of late going 1-2-1 in July so far with their only win coming against the then top team in the league (FC Dallas). The Revs have been without midfielders Steve Ralston and Clint Dempsey as well as forward Pat Noonan due to call-ups to the US for the Gold Cup for all of those games, except for the win in which the Revs had Pat Noonan and Clint Dempsey back. Help is on the way though, as all three players should be back in a Revolution uniform for the upcoming game against the Los Angeles Galaxy on Wednesday, July 27th.

The Revs could feel a little hard done by some of the calls referee Alex Prus made (or failed to make), but in the end they just didnít play well enough to earn the win.

After the Revs controlled the match for the opening minutes, Chivas USA took over and cowned it for the rest of the half, but not before the Revolution had a great goal-scoring opportunity. Taylor Twellman got through the Chivas defense and sent a back-heel into the path of Khano Smith. With no one anywhere near him, Smith opted to one time a shot from outside of the box instead of dribbling in closer. His shot went well high of the net and into the stands. Smith was a non-factor the rest of the half and was subbed out at halftime after another sub-par regular season performance after an impressive preseason.

Chivas had a good chance to take the lead in the 21st minute, but a flurry in the box saw several blocked shots before the ball was cleared by the Revolution defense.

Antonio Martinez thought he earned a penalty kick in the 24th minute when James Riley stepped in front of him, knocking him over. The referee, however, didnít call a foul.

Chivas took the lead in the 38th minute when Douglas Sequeira headed home a cross by Martinez. Sequeira beat goalkeeper Matt Reis to get on the end of the cross. Sequeira threw elbows at Revolution players all match and can count himself lucky not to have been ejected. Somehow he didnít receive even a yellow card for his reckless play.

The Revolution switched from a 3-5-2 formation to a 4-4-2 formation for the first time this year, in the second half. Marshall Leonard came into the game for Jose Cancela and Connally Edozien took over for Khano Smith up top. The change helped the Revs and they gained control of much of the second half.

Edozien had an excellent chance in the 80th minute sending a powerful header on target from 6 yards out, only to see it denied by a diving Brad Guzan.

The Revs had a good shot at a penalty call in the 84th minute when a James Riley cross was deflected out of the box by the hand of Ezra Hendrickson. Despite the blatant hand ball no call was made by Prus. To keep with his inconsistency, a few minute later when a clearly unintentional handball by Shalrie Joseph took place near midfield, Prus called it allowing Chivas to milk a minute off the clock.

Likely angered by the physical play of Chivas and the lack of calls by Alex Prus, Joe Franchino slammed into Chivas midfielder Hector Cuadros in the 87th minute and received a yellow card. Cuadros left on a stretcher in the 87th minute with a concussion and was taken to a hospital for observation.

The Revs next head back home for a match against the Los Angeles Galaxy at 7:30PM on Wednesday, July 27th.
