Revs struggles continue, fall to KC in first home loss
Foxboro, MA. – For the first time since September 4th of 2004, the New England Revolution lost at home as their midseason struggles continued. The Revolution lost 2-1 to Kansas City and have managed to get only 5 points out of their last six games. Due to the Chicago Fire also losing, the Revs remain in first in the Eastern Conference, however they have been overtaken by San Jose in the overall standings.

The Revolution controlled most of the possession and created a lot of chances in the first half, but were unable to get on the score sheet. Taylor Twellman sprung Joey Franchino free of Kansas City’s defense with a through ball down the left flank. Franchino then crossed it to the right side of the box. The ball got just past a sliding Clint Dempsey, but fell right to Steve Ralston, who somehow hit it over the net from about 4 yards out with goalie Bo Oshoniyi out of position.

Two minutes later, Jose Cancela sent a perfect pass to Dempsey, who was free 6 yards from goal. His shot, however was right at Oshoniyi.

Kansas City’s Khari Stephenson caused some problems for the Revs in the 11th minute, forcing goalie Matt Reis into a diving save with his curling shot marked for the upper left corner of the net from 30 yards out.

The Revs should’ve taken the lead in the 22nd minute when Shalrie Joseph stole the ball from Oshoniyi in the right side of the box. Joseph then crossed it to Clint Dempsey, who headed it towards the empty net. Dempsey’s header, however was too soft and somehow Oshoniyi managed to get back to save it.

Jose Cancela forced Oshoniyi to make a diving save with his shot from distance in the 25th minute.

Josh Wolff looked to have given Kansas City the lead in the 31st minute when he rounded Matt Reis and sent a shot on target, but James Riley was their to clear it off the line.

Kansas City took the lead less than two minutes after half time, when Wolff found Chris Klein with a lob over the Revoluion defense. Klein buried it past Reis to give Kansas City the lead.

The Revs replied less than a minute later when Shalrie Joseph powered a header past Oshoniyi off of a Taylor Twellman cross.

Scott Sealy gave the Wizards the lead in the 73rd minute, when Josh Wolff sent the ball past Avery John and James Riley, both teammates of Sealy at some point with the Trinidad and Tobago National Team and Wake Forest, respectfully. Sealy received the ball and slotted it past Reis for the game’s final goal.

"We never had a hold of the game," said Head Coach Steve Nicol after the match. "We were good for long spells in the first half. In the second half, we had some movement and some chances.”

The Revolution look to get back on track Wednesday as they face expansion franchise Real Salt Lake at Gillette Stadium at 7:30PM. The Revs will be bolstered by the return of Jay Heaps from suspension.
