Revs advance to Eastern Conference Final with spectacular comeback
Foxboro, MA. – Playing their first ever game in snow, the New England Revolution overcame a 2-0 deficit to defeat the Metrostars 3-2 on aggregate goals in the Eastern Conference Semifinal. After losing game 1 on the road 1-0, the Revs found themselves down 2-0 on aggregate when Youri Djorkaeff scored in the 59th minute of game two. The Revs then scored three unanswered goals to advance to the Conference Final for the fourth year in a row.

The Revs came into the second leg down a goal thanks to a poor performance in game 1 and a goal off of a long range blast from Amado Guevara in the 34th of that game. The Revs rarely looked threatening in game 1 and seemed to struggle with the playing conditions in the pouring rain on an artificial field.

Game 2 was a different story, however, and the Revs on their home field dominated the possession and chances against the Metrostars. Their play in the first half was a little sloppy thanks to a surprise snow storm, but the underground heating system made the field more playable in the second half.

The Revs dominated possession in the first half, but sloppy play and unpredictable conditions due to the snow saw them squander several good chances. A few times players gave up on balls that looked to be going out, only to see them stop in the snow and appear to be a good opportunity wasted.

The Revs had a good call to get Metrostars’ defender Jason Hernandez ejected just 16 minutes into the game, when a poor goal kick from goalkeeper Tony Meola left Pat Noonan free to run in alone on goal. Hernandez grabbed onto Noonan’s shirt to prevent him from getting to the ball and a foul was called, but no card was given.

In the 29th minute, the Revs had a call for a penalty kick, when Pat Noonan sent a cross into the box. The ball clearly was stopped by Metrostars’ defender Jeff Agoos’ arm and the linesman spotted it. Referee Brian Hall waved him off and allowed the game to play on. Daniel Hernandez received a yellow card for arguing the call.

The Revs had their best chance of the first half in about the 35th minute, when a perfect through ball from Clint Dempsey sent Noonan in on goal. Tony Meola managed to deflect Noonan’s shot wide for a corner.

The Metrostars put themselves up 2-0 on aggregate in the 59th minute. Pinned back in their own half the pressure was on the Metrostars when Clint Dempsey had a great opportunity and saw his shot easily beat Meola before hitting the post. Sergio Galven Rey immediately hit the ball forward to Youri Djorkaeff. Djorkaeff beat Rookie of the Year Michael Parkhust and ran in from midfield alone on goal before burying his shot.

The Revs opted to shake things up soon after the goal. Jose Cancela came in for Daniel Hernandez and James Riley came in for Joe Franchino. The Revs switched to a 3-4-3 formation moving Clint Dempsey up as a third forward.

The move paid dividends as Cancela made an immediate impact and score in the 68th minute. The Uruguayan received the ball from a Taylor Twellman header before avoiding four charging Metrostars’ defenders and sending it past Meola to reduce the margin to 2-1.

Re-energized by the subs the Revs continued to press forward and missed several goal-mouth opportunities before Pat Noonan tied it up in the 73rd minute. Cancela sent in a perfect corner kick that went over Meola as he attempted to grab it. Noonan got on the end of it and headed it into the net to tie the series.

Ten minutes later the Revs scored the series winner as Bermudan Khano Smith received a through ball from Clint Dempsey and dribbled up the left flank. As Meola charged out Smith hammered it into the far side of the net for his first career playoff goal.

Smith who was subbed in on the left wing in the 23rd minute for the injured Marshall Leonard, was injured himself in the 87th minute and had to be taken off the field on a stretcher. Both are expected to miss the next match. The Revs were forced to play out the match a man down the rest of the match and Shalrie Joseph came up big clearing a Youri Djorkaeff header off the line to preserve the win for the Revs.

The Revs next face the Chicago Fire at Gillette Stadium on Sunday, November 6th at 3:00PM in the Eastern Conference Final. The match can also be seen live on ESPN2.
