Revs kick off season with victory over the defending champions on the road
The New England Revolution started off the season in style on Saturday, April 1st with a 1-0 win in Los Angeles against the defending champions, the Galaxy. After losing 1-0 in overtime to the Galaxy in last year’s MLS Cup final and then seeing the Galaxy presented with their championship rings before the game, the Revs had all the motivation they would need. Clint Dempsey scored the Revs’ lone goal and their makeshift defense played a great game to keep Landon Donovan and the Galaxy off the scoreboard. The win was the first in Los Angeles for New England since the inaugural season of MLS in 1996.

Missing last season’s Rookie of the Year and starting center back Michael Parkhurst due to a thigh strain, the Revs opted to play a 3-4-3 formation instead of their normal 3-5-2. Jay Heaps, Daniel Hernandez and James Riley started in defense, with Heaps being the only regular at defense last year. The midfield consisted of Steve Ralston, Andy Dorman, Shalrie Joseph and Joe Franchino. US Internationals’ Clint Dempsey, Taylor Twellman and Pat Noonan started up top.

Goalkeeper Matt Reis, listed as doubtful with a hamstring strain heading into the match, started and looked in great form when called upon. He was tested in just the 6th minute when he was forced to dive to stop a free kick from Herculez Gomez. Gomez forced Reis into another save just three minutes later.

The Revs first real chance of the match came in the 21st minute, when Noonan got on the end of a corner kick from Dorman. Noonan’s shot was blocked by Galaxy defender Nathan Sturgis before it could cause ‘keeper Kevin Hartman any problems.

It looked like the Revs had taken the lead in the 28th minute when a Dempsey cross from just inside the area beat Hartman and landed inside the net. The goal was ruled off as Twellman was judged to have fouled Hartman on the play, though the contact looked minimal.

Five minutes later Dempsey put the Revs on top when he headed a free kick from Andy Dorman well out of the reach of Hartman. The goal was the first for the Revs in meaningful competition in over 419 minutes of play. The Revs had gone scoreless over two legs in the CONCACAF Champions Cup against LD Alajuelense earlier in the year after having been shut out for 120 minutes by the Galaxy in MLS Cup 2005. Their last goal had come in the 4th minute of a 1-0 win over the Chicago Fire in the 2005 Eastern Conference Final and was also scored by Dempsey.

Throughout the rest of the game both sides struggled to create any dangerous scoring opportunities and Reis and Hartman easily saved the few they did produce.

"I didn't think we played particularly well,” Revolution Head Coach Steve Nicol said to MLSNet.com after the match. “We can play a lot better. Passing-wise, we didn't pass the ball well, but it is the first game. I can't complain about a win on the road in the first game of the season, I don't think we've ever done that. I couldn't ask for a better start."

The win was the lone win by an away team on the opening weekend of MLS. The Revs start off the season with 3 away games before heading home to play the Chicago Fire on Sunday, April 30th at 3PM at Gillette Stadium.
